A NORTH Yorkshire hairdresser has created a new product to tackle safety problems surrounding hot hair styling tools.

The DAIO is a tool holder made from silicone that will sustain temperatures up to 300°C, allowing straightening irons and curling tongs to be safely stored while heating up, during use and cooling down.

The product, created by Knaresborough hairdresser David Audsley, is already being sold in the UK and has generated interest from Holland, Finland and Germany.

Mr Audsley, who opened his first salon in 1999, created the DAIO using technologically advanced materials when he wanted to store heated hairstylers safely away from his young children.

He said: "Almost one in 10 of all child burns each year are caused by electrically heated hair appliances and there has been a 16 per cent increase in domestic fire insurance claims directly attributable to heated hair straighteners or appliances."

A donation of £1 from every DAIO sold in the UK will go to the Child Accident Prevention Trust.
