AN ESTATE agency has gifted two bicycles to help women who are trying to put their past behind them and gain independence.

The two silver bicycles have been donated by Otisdale Estate Agents, in Micklegate, York, to York Women's Aid, which supports women and children escaping domestic violence.

The bicycles are being used by residents at York Women's Aid, for exercise and to help them get around the city.

Specially-trained staff at York Women's Aid provide advocacy and emotional and practical support. The organisation also runs a 24-hour helpline.

Manager Geri Smith said: "The bicycles give our residents an immediate sense of independence - something they have usually been denied in the past. We depend upon donations from local businesses and the general public, so this has been a wonderful gift."

Otisdale director Colin Cain, who presented the bicycles, said: "I decided to do this when I heard that residents of Women's Aid needed help with transport.

"It seemed wrong women should feel trapped or isolated when they are trying to build a new life. I am delighted they are useful."

Last year, York Women's Aid, which is largely financed by its own fundraising and donations, accommodated 48 women and 62 children in its refuge.

Its urban and rural outreach projects supported 178 women and helped 260 children living in the community and suffering domestic abuse.

Otisdale, founded in 2004, has offices in York, Selby and Goole.
