A LANDSCAPE and forestry products supplier near York has won a top national green accolade.

Green-tech Ltd, of Nun Monkton, earned Environmental Product Of The Year in the National Recycling Awards.

Richard Kay, managing director, his wife, Rachel, its commercial director, and their 21 staff were today celebrating the top accolade for their fertile, organic-rich topsoil, made from recycled organic waste from Yorkshire Water, green compost and reprocessed silica from local quarries. The result is sold for landscaping and to the horticultural market The victory over competitors, such as Tesco, Boots and many regional authorities as well as household name products, follows hot on the heels of Green-tech's highly commended achievement, which took place at The Horticulture Week Awards.

Green-tech's office and warehouse is in Nun Monkton but it also has two topsoil sites in Yorkshire - at Esholt and Dewsbury - and in Blaydon, Tyne and Wear. A fourth site will open in Tamworth next month.

Mark Whiting, sales director, said: "Everyone here is absolutely buzzing with the news and we are confident that we will see our demand for the product develop significantly.

"We are thilled that a local business can have such an impact on national environmental issues."
