LEEDS, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce has urged City of York Council to provide more business space in its local plan.

Richard Flanagan, president of the York and North Yorkshire Chamber, said further improvements were vital if economic growth was to be encouraged.

He said: “We have always advocated the need for an expansive Local Plan which encourages appropriate development in the right places, and the suggested allocations for housing are a great improvement on previous provisions.

“While the forward-thinking proposals for housing development are welcomed, we feel that the suggested allocations for employment development fall short of what is required to stimulate growth and job creation.

“As a city we have set ourselves ambitious targets in the York Economic Strategy, and we need a choice of sites that are readily deliverable in the right locations, and it is our view that the sites currently proposed for employment development do not go far enough in this regard.”

The plan, which lays out the council’s vision for 22,000 new homes, is being discussed today at a working group meeting at 5pm.
