Cathryn Fawcett owns Field & Fawcett, the wine merchants and delicatessen at Grimston Bar, with husband Peter.

Based on her family’s farm, Field & Fawcett provides wine for some of the UKs premier restaurants and hotels, and additionally sells wine and gourmet food products to their daily customers.

The business was founded in August 2006, when, after 22 years in the wine trade, Mr Fawcett decided it was about time he set out on his own. He invited his wife Cathryn to go on the journey with him to run a delicatessen alongside his wines.

Once they had planning permission they set to work renovating part of the redundant buildings on the family farm which once housed dairy cows. Three years later they had outgrown this space and doubled the size of the shop in 2009.

Celebrating its tenth birthday, this year is also a big year for Field & Fawcett with the opening of The Café at Field & Fawcett, which will be spearheaded by Mrs Fawcett, who is an award winning cook in her own right, and operate under her management.

What job would you like to have other than your own and why?

"I’ve been lucky enough to visit some of the world’s most famous vineyards through our business and combined with our visits to family in New Zealand where we have seen some of the finest wineries, a job running one is my idea of heaven.

"It’s hard work working on a vineyard as our daughter Annabel can lay testament to while she is in her gap year, but I’d love to give it a go. To manage the art of growing, caring, picking and producing wine from start to finish seems very appealing to me and I’d put in a hard day’s graft to get it right."

What makes you most angry?

"Bad manners."

What do you need to make life complete?

"Apart from some more sunshine, I can categorically state, I feel my life is complete.

"I’m relishing the idea of The Café at Field & Fawcett. It’s been great fun to see these farm buildings evolve into a superb setting for such a venture.

"We’ll have a terrific sun trap terrace overlooking fields and our location is perfect for those both living and commuting into York and on the A64 – we’re based at such a major travel hub for tourists and commuters, it makes perfect sense to us - it’s truly an exciting time for Field & Fawcett."

Why do you make a difference?

"I’m keen that we don’t lose sight of some of the best classic dishes that have been at the heart of British cooking for decades. If the ingredients are high quality, they speak for themselves and I’m all for simplicity.

"I’d like to help people appreciate what we do well in our British kitchens. More plate than food isn’t the way I want to go – let’s keep it simple!"
