EMMA BROWN recorded a super six at the York Union of Golf Club's York Ladies Championship.

The Malton & Norton Golf Club ace tamed her home course as a gross 74 handed her a three shot victory over club colleague Carol Simpson.

It is the sixth time Brown, who plays off plus three, has had her name engraved onto the trophy - the first title coming close to two decades ago. After a maiden victory in 1996, the subsequent international amateur star has also claimed the prestigious tournament in 1997, 2007, 2008 and two years ago.

Brown, assistant golf manager at Sandburn Hall Golf Club, in Flaxton, has ensured the trophy yet again resides in Malton's trophy cabinet. The event has now been won by members in ten of the last 14 years.

Malton participants utterly dominated this year's tournament, which was played in difficult conditions that meant play was suspended for an hour so water could be swept off the greens.

Aside from Brown's glory, Mo Thornton, the club's competitions secretary, struck a nett 70 to claim the silver division ahead of Simpson and fellow Malton members Jackie Roberts and Rachel Thomas.

Brown, who managed to avoid the worst of the weather, said of her victory: "It was nice to win and it is always a good event to play in. There is always a good turnout and, as I am not playing much at the moment, I am delighted.

"It was great to see Malton win so many prizes. We do well in the East Riding Alliance, we have a lot of lady members and it is quite competitive as well as being enjoyable.

"Everyone is pleased to see everyone else doing well. I am going to take it as it comes this season but it was nice to win and nice to be able to enjoy it."

Thornton said: "We have to thank the hard work of the greens staff, without whom, we wouldn't have got back out there.

"We had a cloudburst and, in about ten minutes, the greens were flooded and we had to bring the players in. The ninth and the 18th had drained away in about ten minutes - which shows how quickly it drains at Malton - but the others had to be squeegeed.

"Emma is fantastic and she has a fine record in this competition. The times I have played with Emma have inspired me, without a doubt."

On her own performance, Thornton added: "I was just happy. I also finished sixth in the gross competition and I will probably never do that again.

"It was a good day for the club - to have first, second and third in the silver division and first and second in the championship. Lesley Mather also got third in the bronze division."
