Laurel and Hardy, with Robin Simpson as Stan Laurel, left
In his 1976 play Laurel And Hardy, Tom McGrath takes a fly-on-the-wall look at the real people beneath the bowler hats as the boys tell their own stories from beyond the grave.
The darker side of the movie business is here, but so too is the comedy double act's warm and complex relationship and their timeless comedy in the New Vic Theatre's production at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough, from Monday to May 10.
The role of Stan Laurel goes to Robin Simpson, familiar to York Theatre Royal audiences from roles in Pinocchio, Pygmalion and The Little Mermaid.
Meanwhile, City Screen, York, will complement the Stephen Joseph Theatre run of Laurel And Hardy with a 3pm screening of Sons Of The Desert (U) next Sunday. In this 1933 classic, the disaster-prone duo play hen-pecked husbands who have to lie to their wives in order to attend the Sons Of The Desert convention.
