Fresh look for Mallard
3:30pm Wednesday 15th August 2012 in Video By Press reporter
SPEED legend the Mallard, the world’s fastest steam locomotive, has been freshened up in York ahead of an historic reunion with its transatlantic sisters next month. The A4 series of locomotives includes the freshly painted garter blue Mallard, which broke the world speed record by travelling at 126mph on the East Coast Mainline in 1938.
The six surviving A4 locomotives are being gathered for a series of events in 2013 to mark the 75 years since the record was set. Mallard will meet two of its sisters, 60010 Dominion of Canada and 60008 Dwight D Eisenhower, which are being transported from their bases in North America to the National Rail Museum in Shildon early next month. Their first reunion with Mallard will be later in September in York, and the visitors will be in the UK for two years.
