YORK City manager Gary Mills will not change his approach to the FA Trophy final should his side also reach the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final.
The Minstermen take on Newport County in non-League football’s premier knockout competition on Saturday, May 12 at Wembley, where Mills’ team would return eight days later should they emerge triumphant from a two-legged, play-off semi-final against either Mansfield or Wrexham.
But, despite the club’s obvious desire to clinch promotion back to the Football League after eight years in the Conference, Mills insisted that reaching the play-off final would not lead him to consider resting players or rotating his squad for the Trophy showpiece.
Talking at Wembley, where Mills took part in the FA Trophy media day yesterday, the City chief passionately reiterated his desire to be successful on two fronts.
He said: “If we get to Wembley twice, we will come here on May 12, win the Trophy, celebrate that and then come down the following weekend and celebrate promotion.
“They are both fantastic opportunities and we won’t take the Trophy final lightly if we do get to the play-off final.
“I want to win both and that won’t change. One will not be prioritised over the other.
“I’m a manager who picks the best team for every game, week in, week out. I will do that for the Trophy final and won’t be sentimental towards anybody in my selection.
“It’s all about this football club winning although things do change in terms of picking the best team. People get injured and players gain form and lose it.
“Little things and big things can happen in the matches we have left which can determine what will be the right team to win games on any given day.”
Moore and merrier
YORK City chairman Jason McGill made a special stop before heading into Wembley for the pre-FA Trophy final media day yesterday.
McGill, who accompanied City boss Gary Mills, his assistant Darron Gee and players Chris Smith and Matty Blair to the legendary venue, stopped off at the statue of England’s World Cup winning captain, the late Bobby Moore, no doubt hoping for inspiration.
