In a barn adjoining tiny Pond Cottage (Brandsby Road, Stillington) is a treasure-trove of domestic bygones.

For the Thurstans are antique dealers, specializing 'lutchenalia' and pine furniture.

The 18th-century house itself is furnished with antiques, and its shelves and nooks are filled with tunas. There are collections of coronation mugs and Staffordshire dogs in the low-beamed sitting-room, where high-backed wing chairs are grouped around an inglenook fireplace.

This is a house of twists and turns, unexpected steps and low windows. Its pleasant bedrooms overlook a terrace, lawn and a natural pond.

Dianne serves only breakfast because (the citizens of nearby York being great diners-out) the area is very well supplied with eating-places.
