St Margaret's church, Walmgate

3:35pm Monday 8th May 2006

The richest and most beautiful example of pure Norman craftsmanship in York is to be seen in the doorway for the porch of St Margaret's Church.

It is well back from the street across its large churchyard and was first mentioned in a charter dated between 1177 and 1181.

The doorway, dating from around 1160, is said to have come from St Nicholas's Church in Lawrence Street, which was destroyed in the siege of York in 1644.

Thanks to a grant from the Lottery Fund, the church opened as York Early Music Centre in Millennium year.

Anyone can look round the church, just go round the back, opposite H Todd's shop and ring the bell.
