DAVID Knight put York's young bowlers to the sword as he led Askham Bryan's charge to victory.

York seemed to have their HPH York Vale League division one game under control by restricting the home side to 50-1 after 20 overs.

But the picture changed dramatically when Knight rode to his side's rescue with a quickfire 87 not out - 66 coming in boundaries. That included seven maximums - four in one over - as he twice cleared the horticultural shed, which is 30 yards beyond the boundary at the College ground.

He put on 75 with Nick Janulewicz in nine overs as the villagers finished on 191-3. York, who included six players aged under 16, were held together by Marcus Bellerby (41), but fell short at 161-7.

Champions Hemingbrough suffered another defeat. They were shot out for 88, John Patrick taking 4-32 as North Duffield romped home by seven wickets.

Bishopthorpe's opening bowlers Ian Holmes (5-22) and Scott Reeves (4-34) paved the way for a four-wicket victory over Burn.

Chasing 143, Bishopthorpe were wobbling on 86-5 but were steered home by Danny Williams (67) and Holmes (35 retired) with eight balls to spare.

Ravindra Sawant grabbed 6-20 in only his second game for British Sugar but his side still lost to Barmby Moor by 15 runs.

Clifton Alliance's Jon Blaydon, Simon Cook and David Heartshorne each took three wickets as Fulfordgate were floored for 62, Alliance winning their division two encounter by eight wickets.

Ben Johnson won by the same margin after Steve Wragg (5-34) and Darren Snowden (4-23) fired out Hirst Courtney for 61.

Heworth looked to be in the driving seat as Tim Peet's 74, aided by Steve Parkinson's unbeaten 40, took them to 213-6 against Westow. But the Ryedale-based side finished six-wicket victors thanks to Mark Earle (52) and Andrew Welford (49).

York University Staff also topped 200 with Affaq Ahmad's 53 leading them to 227. He then took 5-12 as Kelfield were bowled out for 121 despite the best efforts of Phil Smith (46) and Martyn Rhodes (43).

In division three, Bryan Dale grafted 38 overs for his 57 as Sheriff Hutton stuggled to 117-7 against North Cave. An unbroken stand of 104 between James Ferguson (65no) and Charlie Cockin (39no) gave Cave an eight-wicket win.

Bishopthorpe II and Selby II fashioned the day's closest finish in their division four clash.

Only two boundaries were scored as the Bishops laboured to 87-9. Ben Smith whipped out four of Selby's top five batsmen to have the visitors at 58-8 but Steve Whitehead kept his nerve for a priceless 29no as Selby eased in.

Hemingbrough youngster Dan Collins pressed his claims for a first team call with a career best 7-12 as Burton Salmon made just 77. Hemingbrough glided home by eight wickets with another teenager, Layton Hallam, scoring 48no.

Goole beat Stockton & Hopgrove II by 86 runs in division five, where the villagers' Mark Collinson suffered a freak injury. Missing a hook shot, he dislocated his knee, was bowled and taken to hospital by ambulance, accompanied by his father and batting partner, Nigel.

Performance of the week

RUNS were hard to come by on damp wickets - but not for Huntington's Darren Horsford. The opener smashed an unbeaten 131 in a division five game against Carlton Towers, reduced to 30 overs. He hit 80 in the last ten overs as Huntington totalled 197-5 to win by 93 runs.
