Students held in reserve for Knights squad

At least one York St John University student will be thrown into the mix tomorrow when York City Knights’ second string go to Sheffield for a Reserve Championship match.

Chris Whitfield has been included in the party for the match, which will be played at Mount St Mary’s, kick off 2.30pm.

Also in a provisional squad of 19 are fellow York St John students Joe Mann, Alex Walker and Selby’s Jamie Baxter, who was in last year’s under-18s squad, although not all of them are likely to feature.

Trialist Rob Fox will also get his chance to shine. The ex-Castleford junior was to play in the reserves’ encounter at Halifax nine days ago only for that game to be postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Knights reserves: from Dent, Winstanley, Poutney, Silburn, Law, Craig, Carmody, Stearman, Brining, Howard, Barber, Anholm, Caddie, Whitfield, Thorpe, Fox, Baxter, Mann, Walker.

Meanwhile, Knights centre Matt Garside and Batley’s Gareth Moore, the former York half-back, have been cautioned by the Rugby Football League for fighting in the 48th minute of Sunday’s Co-operative Championship fixture, an incident which saw both sin-binned. Neither received any further punishment.
