David Hick takes up Knights commercial role

A NEW commercial chief was to begin work at York City Knights today – and one of his immediate tasks will be to bring in cash to fund the new reserves team.

David Hick, 56, a “lifelong rugby league fan and past player”, has been employed as a marketing and sponsorship manager – the first such role at the Knights since Simon Moat left in the spring of 2010.

Knights general manager Ian Wilson said the club “had not felt the need to replace” Moat back then but recently decided to advertise for a new experienced individual to take up this position “in order to move forward and grow” the club.

Thorpe Willoughby-based Hick – no relation to supporters’ club committee member Ian Hick – brings 25 years of experience in recruitment and sales at management and director level.

Wilson said: “He’s very approachable and a good communicator. He’s presentable and experienced and he came across very well in interview. I think he will be a good appointment.”

As revealed by The Press on Saturday, the Knights are bringing back a reserves team for 2012, having initially disbanded the second string at the end of last season.

They had not budgeted for a reserves team this year, though, and so are seeking sponsorship to cover the cost of running the side.

York transport firm Anytime Travel, which is run by Knights kitman Steve Harris, have already come on board as travel sponsors, but Wilson added: “One of David’s first tasks will be to find new sponsors for the reserves.

“There are also still some sponsorship packages available for this season and we will soon be looking at next year, and of course we will be looking for David to bring in new avenues of revenue.”

Anyone interested in Knights sponsorship can phone the club on 01904 767404.
