YORK City Knights appear to have finally lost out to arch-rivals Hunslet in the race to sign former Super League winger Waine Pryce – but caretaker-boss Chris Thorman believes the club have already bolstered their options in the outside backs .
As revealed by The Press in October, the Knights were among a clutch of clubs who spoke to Pryce after his contract at Championship club Featherstone ran out, though no deal was reached as the player considered his future.
The former Castleford and England ‘A’ star is now seeking a way back into the game and, while Hunslet player-coach Paul March, the former Knights star, yesterday said no deal had been signed with the Hawks, it is believed one has been verbally agreed, with Pryce having rejected terms offered by York.
Thorman admitted the Knights had been interested in bringing the burly wide-man to Huntington Stadium, but believes new dual-registered recruit Jordan Thompson can prove a decent acquisition in his stead.
“Waine is a good player and a few clubs were willing to offer him the chance to get back into the game,” he said.
“However, we’ve got Jordan Thompson from Castleford now and he will be pushing for a spot in the threequarters. It’s always important to have competition for places, and we’ve been a bit light in the outside-backs so strengthening there is an area we’ve looked at.
“A lot of people at Cas rate Jordan highly, as they do John Davies (the forward who has also joined on a dual registration), and I’m looking forward to working with them.
“It’s exciting for them as well, and good for us to forge links with the Tigers.”
Meanwhile, the Knights’ rearranged Northern Rail Cup group match at home to London Skolars has been confirmed for Wednesday, March 10, with a 7pm kick off.
The early start for a midweek game is necessary to give the Londoners time to catch the last train back to the capital.
The match, the last group game, could prove vital to the Knights’ hopes of progressing to the knockout stages, which is partly dependent on Hunslet losing to Featherstone tonight.
All tickets issued for the match’s original date, February 21, including the free under-16s tickets given out in partnership with sponsor Northern Rail, will be valid next Wednesday.
Turnstiles at the Courtney’s end of the ground will open at 6pm, with Jockey Lane opening at 6.30pm.
Ticket-holders can access Bar 13 from 5pm via the stairs in Courtney’s reception. Pre-match meals can be booked by phoning the Knights on 01904 641724. There will also be happy hour between 5pm and 6pm.
Knights fans are reminded season tickets are valid for Sunday’s Challenge Cup third round tie at Gateshead, using voucher ‘A’ from their booklets. The ticket must be removed from the booklet at the turnstiles.
