YORK City Knights have released Adam Dent after the winger fell frustrated at his lack of first-team opportunities.

The 23-year-old local lad followed big brother Ben from the under-20s into first grade, but has made only 18 appearances since his 2014 debut, notching 10 tries.

Injuries meant he turned out in the League One play-off semi-finals of 2015 and 2016, but the arrival of Dee Foggin-Johnston and Tommy Brierley saw him fall back down the pecking order, and he has yet to feature this season. The Knights also signed speedy Nick Rawsthorne on loan from Hull FC last week.

Dent turned out for Heworth ARLC in the Yorkshire Men’s League on Saturday.

Head coach James Ford said: “Adam had come to see me about his frustrations with a lack of opportunities. With us bringing wingers in and with Tommy Saxton coming back from injury, those opportunities were limited.

“I said it’s been like this for a couple of years yet he’s always ended up playing in semi-finals and that he’d get opportunities.

“He felt he wanted to play week in week out so we agreed to release him. We wish him well.”

Meanwhile, Ford expects fellow outside-back Adam Swift to return to the Knights after a spell in the French leagues.

Rather than send the 21-year-old centre out on loan, he was released to play over the Channel.

Ford said: “When he comes back, we’ll take him. He’s got potential, he just fell down the pecking order after getting injured (in pre-season).

“We don’t have a reserve team and we thought it best he played regularly for his development.”
