"WE'VE got a good thing going here... and I made the right decision to come."

So declared Mike Emmett on his impressive start to life at York City Knights which has seen the Minster city men chalk up five straight wins - culminating in the particularly pleasing victory at his old stomping ground.

The 28-year-old packman, having been appointed vice-captain during pre-season, was a try-scoring man of the match in the win over Keighley and scored again in last weekend's 46-16 win at former club Doncaster. And, while he accepts it is still early days in the campaign, he is delighted to have got off on the right foot.

"It's a good start. I think we've got a good thing going at the club at the minute," said Emmett, who will be hoping to continue on the crest of a wave this Sunday against another of League One's form teams, Rochdale.

"All the boys are enjoying playing together and that's showing up in the results. It's been great so far.

"Obviously at this stage I've made the right decision to come. I'm very happy, to be fair."

This victory sequence is in stark contrast to Emmett's fortunes at Doncaster last year when, after taking the Championship by storm in 2014, they lost 22 of their 23 league outings to tumble back down to League One.

The Dons had wanted him to stay at the Keepmoat and spearhead a bid to bounce back up, while he also had approaches from clubs in the Championship.

But he said: "When I spoke to James Ford I listened to what he wanted and I liked what I heard.

"A lot of my mates were coming here as well, like Brett Waller, Rich Wilkinson and Austin Buchanan, and there were guys here I already knew like James Haynes and Mash (Mark Applegarth).

"It all seemed right at the time to come here and I'm happy with how it's all going.

"There's no hard feelings with Doncaster or anything like that.

"It is always good to get one over your old club but, for me, getting the two points (last Sunday) was the most important thing. It's what we needed.

"I didn't really expect it to be that comfortable on the scoreboard. For the first 20 or 30 minutes it was pretty close but we did something right and managed to pull away."

Emmett also had a warning for the rest of League One, saying York's new-look team can only get better.

Asked the reasons behind their bright start to term, he said: "It's a lot down to team spirit and the hard work through the off-season.

"For a lot of new lads to come into a team and play how York and James Ford wants us to play, it can take time, but it seems to be working well.

"We had a good off-season in training, but we didn't get the friendlies in after the bad weather put paid to them, so we're still learning how each other plays and we should get better as we continue and as we keep working."

Next up for Emmett and co is a trip to Spotland in the iPro Sport League One Cup quarter-finals.

The Hornets likewise have a 100 per cent record so far, with six straight wins, having kicked off with victory at fellow title hopefuls Barrow in the first round of the iPro Sport Cup.

Said Emmett: "They've had some good results. We want to do well in the cup as well as the league but this will be another tough test.

"Both teams are doing well and, the more you win, the more other teams want to knock you down."
