NOSTALGIC York City Knights boss James Ford has urged his troops to make the most of their "opportunity to represent this city" as they get their 2016 preparations into full swing.

After strength and fitness testing ten days ago, the new-look squad begin pre-season proper tonight at their new permanent base at York St John University's Nestle Park facility.

And Ford, who retired as a player 12 months ago to take over as head coach, says he would love to be able to turn back the clock and lace up his boots again, even for the rigours of gruelling fitness training.

"As a former player I'd say maybe you might get a few nerves when it comes to pre-season because you don't know how tough it will be - but I would rather be in their shoes than mine," said Ford.

"There's nothing that can replace actually going out and playing and preparing.

"That can't last forever and I'd urge players to make the most of it.

"I'm sure their looking forward to getting stuck in. They're very fortunate to have the opportunity to represent this city and play this fantastic sport and hopefully they'll make the most of it."
