“IT doesn’t bother me where we play as long as I’m enjoying playing.”

That was new recruit Lee Waterman’s straightforward answer when asked on his return to York City Knights about their stadium predicament.

Try machine Waterman watched the Knights’ 42-10 win over Coventry on Sunday from pitchside at Clifton Park, with his arrival back at the Minster city outfit being announced at half-time of the Kingstone Press League One clash.

The club’s temporary digs, with it’s one small, modest stand, are a far cry from Doncaster’s plush Keepmoat Stadium, where he has spent the last three and a bit seasons.

They are also different to the Knights’ former Huntington Stadium home, where he played from late 2009 to the end of 2011, and to Bootham Crescent, where - if community stadium talks ultimately prove successful - they should be playing before moving into the planned new arena.

But Waterman was more fussed about helping the team - and enjoying his rugby again.

“It doesn’t really bother me,” he said of the ground situation. “I’ve spoken to a few people about it but enjoying playing is the most important thing, no matter where you play.”

Waterman has been a regular in the Dons side since first leaving Huntington Stadium at the end of 2011.

However, he asked for a release earlier this month and returned to his old amateur club Skirlaugh.

“I just wasn’t enjoying it,” he explained. “I thought about going back playing amateur to get the buzz back. I played one game for Skirlaugh and James Ford (Knights coach) rang me and asked if I would be interested in coming to York.

“I said I wasn’t looking at signing anywhere and asked if he could give me until the end of the month. He rang me back and obviously here I am.”

Waterman scored 36 tries in his maiden season as he helped Doncaster win promotion as Championship One champions.

The Dons then surprised the Championship by reaching the play-offs in 2013 and 2014, but Paul Cooke’s men have struggled this year, with ten straight defeats. In total, Waterman scored 61 tries in 81 appearances for the South Yorkshire side.

“I’m not sure why but I just wasn’t enjoying it this year,” he said. “It’s nothing to do with the team losing, I just didn’t have the buzz. I don’t know why, maybe it was my own doing.

“But this is going to be a fresh start and I want to enjoy it. I just want to start where I left off last time I was here and hopefully get that buzz back and hopefully help the team get promoted.”

Of the 2011 squad, only James Haynes, Jonny Presley, Ed Smith and Kriss Brining remain in the first-team ranks, though Ford is still here having swapped his boots for a coaching badge and Jack Stearman is also in the backroom staff.

Waterman, who has agreed terms until the end of the season, said: “I know a few of the lads. I’m best mates with James Haynes and I know the likes of Ben Dent, Tyler Craig, Jack Aldous. It’s good.”

Waterman won promotion with York in 2010, bagging 25 tries and 102 goals in 27 outings that year to finish as Championship One’s leading points-scorer. In total he notched 30 tries and 122 goals in 42 games for the club.
