YORK City Knights target Peter Fox has signed for Kingstone Press Championship outfit Doncaster.

The Knights had approached the former England, Wakefield and Hull Kingston Rovers winger earlier this year with a view to bringing him back to his home-town club, where his career kicked off in earnest a decade ago.

However, the 30-year-old, who was a free agent after being released by Halifax, has penned a deal with the Dons, who are coached by his former Hull KR team-mate Paul Cooke.

He also revealed on social media that he had been close to retiring.

Fox, who now lives in East Yorkshire, wrote: "Thought I would never pick a ball up again. I have to admit I was days away from hanging the boots up.

"Thank you so much Doncaster for giving me the opportunity to play for you. I honestly can't wait to play again."

Fox, who broke try-scoring records for York in 2005 as they won the National League Two title, had told The Press in January that he would only sign back at the Knights if it's "best all round" for himself and the club, who have begun the season homeless as the community stadium saga goes on.

It was reported then that "two or three" Championship clubs and semi-professional rugby union clubs were also tailing him.
