NEV MORRISON should not worry about his freak miss-of-the-season contender – and instead be happy with his hat-trick on a sensational opening day for York City Knights.

That was the view of head coach James Ford, who reckons such a gaffe is unlikely to occur again in the winger’s entire career – and more importantly that the player is looking like a top-quality signing already.

The Knights were trailing hosts London Skolars 4-0 in their iPro Sport Cup first round tie when Mor - rison crossed the whitewash and ran round towards the posts only to drop the ball with nobody near him.

It seemed a crucial error at the time midway through the first half, but the former Doncaster and Sheffield flier made amends with a superb treble on debut as the Knights stormed to a 78-10 success.

“He scored a hat-trick and, as a former winger and centre myself, he will be happy with that,” said Ford.

“He made an error but that’s not going to happen again so we won’t be making an issue of that.

“He’s got lots of pace, he’s strong and he’s a good athlete.

“He’s got a good reactive side to his game as well. I’m sure he will have a fantastic season.”

Two other debutants, centre Pete Aspinall, with two, and substitute Liam Cunningham also scored tries, as did prop Jake Joynt on his return to the club.

Cunningham was named The Press man of the match after his impact off the bench, which included setting up four other touchdowns.

Said Ford: “Liam Cunningham’s impact was excellent. You have to consider the shape and move - ment around him as well, but he did very well. He looks like he will be a good signing – but we knew that before the game.

“Pete Aspinall’s performance was a bit mixed. He did some really good things and couple of things he can do better as he progresses as a player. He took his tries really well and there’s a lot of potential in him.”
