York City ‘deflated’ as Martin Foyle’s promotion dream is dashed at Wembley

YORK City manager Martin Foyle admitted his players were “very deflated” after their promotion dream ended in 3-1 defeat to Oxford United at Wembley.

An own goal by U’s ‘keeper Ryan Clarke saw City trail 2-1 during the interval of yesterday’s Blue Square Premier final at Wembley.

But substitute Alfie Potter added a third goal in stoppage time to join Matt Green and James Constable on the scoresheet and secure a return to the Football League for Oxford.

Foyle later lamented his side’s start to the game after conceding twice in the opening 21 minutes, as well as the failure to convert second-half chances.

The disappointed City chief said: “Defeat’s hard to take and we had a very deflated changing room afterwards. You have to give full credit to Oxford though.

“They started the game that bit better than us and the two early goals gave them a big lift. It gave them breathing space but, when we got a goal back, we knew we would get chances. Unfortunately, we couldn’t take them.”

But Foyle would not let the result detract from his side’s efforts throughout the season, adding: “We know we are a bit behind Oxford in quality, strength and that bit of experience and I have tried to build a side very quickly.

“They have been excellent for me. We were looking to break into the top ten this season, but we have had good cup runs and reached the play-off final.”

Foyle will now set about the task of strengthening his team and admitted that he would be prioritising firepower and speed, saying: “We are miles off the likes of Oxford and Luton financially, but I will be looking to bring one or two players of the right type in.

“We need somebody who can pinch a goal as well as a bit of pace.

“Most of the players are under contract and I’m happy with what I’ve signed up, but we will be looking to recruit more Conference players.

“That’s what you need in this division because League players are a different animal.”

City’s 37-goal leading marksman Richard Brodie is under contract at Bootham Crescent until next summer, but Foyle is in discussions about extending his current deal.

Brodie would, otherwise, be free to leave the club under the Bosman ruling in a year’s time, leaving City with the dilemma of whether or not to cash in on his talents this summer.

Foyle said: “He is under contract and we are talking about another one with him. Brodes is a fantastic lad who was probably a bit overawed here.

“There’s still parts of his game that can be worked on, but he’s scored lots of goals for us this season.”

The City boss is also hoping to see the best of £55,000 striker Michael Gash in 2010/11 after he impressed during a 20-minute outing at Wembley.

Foyle said: “The other two strikers have been brilliant for me and Michael Gash was unfortunate with his foot injury. I hope he comes back in pre-season flying and ready to score goals because I know what I’ve bought there.”

But the City boss admitted the club now need to guard against a play-off hangover as they look to contend with the disappointment of yesterday’s defeat.

He said: “I remember at Port Vale when we lost the play-off final at Wembley and only won one of our first ten games at the start of the next season, but then won ten out of ten to get promoted. People might think it’s easy to get over things like this, but it isn’t.

“It will be hard next season. I know Grimsby and Darlington’s budgets already and Fleetwood will be moneybags as well.”

Foyle added his appreciation for City’s 9,000-strong following under the arch, saying: “Our fans turned out in numbers and I’d like to say a big thank-you for their efforts.”

Thought Gash was very good when he came on. Pity Martin took Ranks off - i would've gone 4 3 3 but then again the manager has proven many times that he knows best!!

Agreed Sir Alex, I thought Gash looked a class above when he came on, probably the best on the pitch for the last 20 minutes. Hopefully will be great for next season if he gets and keeps fit.

Agree with both of you.Thought Rankine was unlucky to come off but MF had to make changes.
Let`s remember where we were this time last season and where we are now.None of us expected to be in a playoff final so full credit to all concerned.
Yes defeat hurts but well done to Oxford I hope they do well, there support was fantastic. It was a hard fought game with no nastiness only one booking and that was justified.
If we keep the same players I,m sure we`ll do well next season and be a force to be reckoned with.
Well done to the players and management for what they have achieved so far.Roll on next season!

i agree, the oxford fans were excellent. not only inside the ground but in the bars and pubs we went into in central london. singing and noisy, but perfectly well behaved. plenty of them shook our hands and said good luck for the match etc.
couldn't have been any different from the luton scum we had to contend with.

It will be hard next season. I know Grimsby and Darlington’s budgets already and Fleetwood will be moneybags as well.
Maybe City need richer new owners. A Chairman who owns a small packaging business in Malton, and team shirts with a sponsorship by a solicitor smacks of footy "on the cheap". Maybe I'm wrong?

"Defeat’s hard to take." a slightly odd thing to say given the team's past experience! On a more serious note York tend to slip back in the second half of the season and so leave themselves not only the inevitable pressure of the play-offs but also a need to get back into winning ways. Moreover, Martin Foyle did say that he didn’t mind which teams he met in the play-offs but it must be best to have the advantage of playing teams ending the season lower in the table to you. More strategic thinking may be needed rather than the current match-to-match approach. Still it feels much better to lose a play-off than it is avoiding relegation.

I will not critisise any of the players for yesterdays defeat.

What a season both they and the management team have given us.

12months and two trips to Wembley along with one to the Britania stadium, a great time for me and my little club.

I want to thank Jason, the Directors, Martin, Andy and all of the backroom staff including Steve Torpey (what a job he and the Youth team have done this term) for giving me and my family a great time on the helter skelter of Football.

Now to look forward to next season and go for automatic promotion. Forget the past as it is what it is, the past.

Well done to you all and thanks once again Martin and Andy.

If you know anyone with 5 or 10 million to "invest" in the club, get them to call the McGills. Otherwise...
I'm happy to have a local businessman and his family who are utterly committed to the club, doing whatever they can. Massive contrast to another rich "benefactor" who recently had to answer before a higher court.

Sunday's defeat was painful and the ache may persist a while, but I hope fans and players alike can begin quickly to put all that behind us, and start to look forward to next season and a renewed charge up the Conference and into the Football League.

How about Luton at home for the opening game of the season?
