Surrey's business community came through 1998 relatively unscathed despite fears of an economic down-turn.

Business Link Surrey's Chief Executive, Anthony Pooley, said that many businesses could look to the future with confidence.

The latest Chamber of Commerce quarterly economic survey reveals that business activity remained stable from October through to December.

The survey also shows that Surrey exporters continue to cope with competitive pressures in international markets.

Mr Pooley said: "1998 was a difficult year for business in the UK as a whole but the results of the four quarterly economic surveys show that Surrey companies fared better than most."
