Arthur Cox, 59, from Huntington, York: “The result was disappointing. Although City tried their best, it just wasn’t enough on the day. You can’t take anything away from the players, though, and it was a brilliant experience. Wembley is a fantastic stadium and the weather played its part.”

Andy Dickson, 44, from Windermere, who was at Wembley with his 12-year-old son Joseph: “I was brought up in York and supported City as a teenager when Keith Walwyn was the main man. We competed and it could have gone either way, so I thought we did really well. I’m really impressed with Wembley and we’ve had a great day out – for City just to get here was a real achievement. Joseph, who has never worn a City shirt before, has one on and he’ll wear it again.”

Helen Harding, 58, from Warthill, near York: “It’s my first City match since I was a young girl, but I wanted to come to Wembley because half my family are here – 23 of us, with the youngest member being three. I really enjoyed it – it’s a wonderful stadium and the people of York have done the city proud, so I’m sure a great deal of fun has been had.”

Debbie Harding, 27, who lives in Leeds but is originally from York: “It was a great atmosphere and I’m surprised by how many York fans got along for it, so I’m proud to have been a part of it. My family all support City, so it’s great to have been able to see them play at somewhere like Wembley.”

Max Benson, 19, who lives in Newcastle, but is originally from Strensall, York: “I’ve been watching City for 15 years and, unfortunately, it was the same old story. Wembley is an outstanding stadium and walking down Wembley Way with all the City supporters was amazing. Despite the result, it was a cracking day out, a fantastic weekend, and at least the money we’ve made will help keep my little club running.”

Neil Haw, 42, of Huntington, York: “It’s a shame the second half ended so disappointingly. The first half was a credit to York and to both teams. I’m glad York got here anyway and it was entertaining.”

Keith Cartledge, 45, of Osbaldwick: “I do not think City were quite good enough really. They missed the two players that were cup-tied and did not have the width to create enough chances. Brodie was on his own and Sodje was ineffective. The better team won.”

Martin Skaife, of Knaresborough: “The better team won really. It’s the same as all season – we lost our way in the second half. They were poor in the first half and got worse in the second. They just cannot score goals this season.”

David Taylor, 45, of Falkirk: “The best side won to be honest. York had their chances but never really looked like doing anything. The stadium is very good – the atmosphere does not beat Bootham Crescent, but it is good.”

David Emery, 32, of London: “I think the stadium is a huge improvement on the old one. It’s a world-class
stadium now. It’s disappointing there were no real chances. If York had scored in the first half it could have been very different, but in the end it looked like they did not know what to do in the middle.”

Alan Rhodes, 50, of Hull Road, York: “I thought we played really well in the first half but ran out of steam in the second. It was a good show and a team to be proud of.”

Martin Hunter, 27, of London: “It was a good first half. If York got a goal in the first half it could have been very different. The first goal was always going to be crucial.”

Rob Fawdington, 27, of Stockton Lane: “It was the same as we have seen all season. Wembley was great. I spent most of the first half watching the stadium rather than the game. We were beaten by a better side. We have played some good games this season, but then we have played some terrible ones. This was one of the terrible ones.”

Raymond Gilpin, 59, of Badger Hill: “It was as expected. Having seen Stevenage play York City a few weeks ago, it was fairly even stevens in the first half, as it was here. But in the second half their power and strength were way above York’s and it showed through. It proves again we do not have a team to compete well in this division.”

Abbi Webster, 31, of Poppleton: “I thought the first half was really good. In the second half we got a bit over-powered and their finishing was the difference in the game.”

John Wooldridge, 20, of Holgate: “We played really well in the first half, but the second half was not brilliant.”

Jack Lawn, 20, of Acomb: “It was an amazing stadium. It’s a shame the football was not up to scratch.”

Bob Blenkinsop, originally from York but now of Derby: “I thought York gave it a good effort but were not quite good enough in the end. But they got a good support and atmosphere and it was a good day out.”
