YORK City chiefs say they are “disappointed” and “embarrassed” after some fans lit flares at Wembley during Saturday’s FA Trophy final.

Red-and-white smoke billowed out from behind one of the goals before kick-off and during the match’s early stages, with stewards moving in on a section of the stadium which contained members of the supporters’ group Jorvik Reds.

Neither Metropolitan Police nor the Football Association could confirm yesterday whether any fans had been arrested or ejected from the stadium following the incidents, which come after football bosses warned City last year they could face being docked points if their supporters misbehaved following a flare-throwing episode during a match at Woking.

“We don’t know the background to what happened, but we are disappointed to see flares lit at Wembley,” said City’s communications and community director Sophie Hicks.

“We think it was certainly down to over-exuberance, but it puts the club in an embarrassing position when representatives from the Football Association were at Wembley. However, we did query how these flares were able to be brought into the stadium.”

A Jorvik Reds statement said: “Throughout this season, we have been told on many occasions by other fans, players and people at the club that our displays give the day something extra for the players.

“We wanted to help spur the team on to a win because the odds were against York and it was, of course, the last game of a very poor season.

“Inspiration and passion is at an all-time low for this club – we have had our worst season ever and very little to cheer.”
