STRIKERS and left-sided players will be the priority for York City manager Martin Foyle during his summer recruitment drive.

Moments after the final whistle had blown at Wembley’s 2-0 FA Trophy final defeat to Stevenage on Saturday, Foyle’s thoughts were turning to strengthening his squad for next season.

Foyle will also look to resist approaches for his own players with teenager Adam Boyes, who caught the eye of Manchester United, Middlesbrough and Tottenham 12 months ago, likely to attract interest again.

Goalkeeper Michael Ingham and top scorer Richard Brodie could be other targets along with Ben Purkiss, who is now out of contract and entitled to a free transfer under the Bosman ruling.

Boyes, Ingham and Brodie have all signed deals with City until the summer of 2010, along with David McGurk, Daniel Parslow and Simon Russell, Craig Farrell and Ben Wilkinson.

Daniel McBreen will be leaving for North Queensland Fury, but Foyle will decide which members of the rest of the squad he wants to retain for next season after discussing a wage budget with chairman Jason McGill.

Foyle said: “Two or three will get attention from other clubs, but the little bit of money we have generated from the Trophy run might give us a chance to strengthen the squad because we do need that. That’s not criticising the lads because they are an honest bunch and their attitudes are good, but we are just lacking in the final third of the pitch.

“It’s important to balance the squad up with two or three left-footers. We also need a couple of strikers who can retain possession.”
