THIS is it. York City’s day of destiny at football’s arena of legends. Fifteen years, eleven months and ten days after they last trod the hallowed Wembley turf, City have returned to the home of football. Victory against Stevenage Borough today in the FA Trophy Final would see York lift the first national domestic cup in their 87-year history.

Thousands of City fans converged on London today by coach, train and car.

Up to 15,000 were expected to be at Wembley roaring their team on. Back here in York, tens of thousands more were expected to be watching the game on TV, at the pub or in their own sitting room.

At least one fan, the club’s patron, John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, even promised to let out his own rallying cry from an aeroplane thousands of feet above London, en route to Toronto: “Come on City! Come on you Minstermen!”

Even should they lose, City would still be winners today. They have avoided relegation from the Blue Square Premier. The team have got to walk out at the historic home of football. And they have given their fans a great day to remember. The takings from today’s game will help to set the club up for a strong Blue Square campaign next year.

But forget all that, for now. Today is all about magic. The magic of the beautiful game played on the most famous turf of all.

And we want them to win, and to bring that silverware home.

So all together now… Come on, City!
