SEND Your Coach to Wembley competition winner Peter Swann will revisit the famous stadium 16 years after cheering his brother on to victory under the old Twin Towers.

Peter, York Railway Institute’s head of girls football, was nominated by players Georgia Rogers and Steph Harper for VIP treatment in Harrogate-based IT company Intechnology's executive box at Saturday’s FA Trophy final between York City and Stevenage.

The prize will evoke fond memories for the New Lane trainer, who was in the crowd when younger sibling Gary opened the scoring as City defeated Crewe in the 1993 Third Division play-off final.

“It’s something you dream about seeing your brother’s name in lights on the Wembley scoreboard,” Peter grinned. “Watching him score and wheel away was great, and then we had the tension of the penalty shoot-out.

“Thankfully, Ginner (Wayne Hall) buried his and it was a special moment that all the players still savour. For the parents, siblings, sons and daughters, who are directly linked, it’s a special occasion as well.

“We had our own party and, if York can win the Trophy, it will give the whole city and its economy a boost.”

Midfielder Gary, who scored six goals in a century of appearances for City between 1992 and 1994, is now a leisure centre manager in Guildford and is hoping to join his brother at Wembley on Saturday. He only stopped playing for Cuckfield in the East Sussex County League two years ago at the age of 45, while Peter has ensured the family’s connection with York RI remains strong.

Before being scouted by the Minstermen, Gary played alongside Peter for the Institute under Ernie Fairclough.

Peter, meanwhile, is now overseeing a burgeoning girls section at RI and managing the under-13s, who have just finished their season as runners-up.

The U10s won their league despite forming less than a year ago, while the U12s finished in a respectable mid-table position, considering most of the players were a year younger than their opponents.

• York RI are hoping to set up a new girls’ U10 team for next season. Anybody interested should phone Peter on 07906 397447.
