A SIX-YEAR dream to regenerate a park and bring a twinkle to children's eyes is to be completed by October. Twinkle Park is undergoing a £300,000 transformation and a unique pagoda designed by Shooters Hill artist Nigel Abbott, has been chosen as its centrepiece. His company, Furnitubes International, based in New Cross, was chosen among 10 other architects for its futuristic design. Second and third prizes went to Woolwich and Lewisham companies.

The Deptford park used to be a local authority playground, but after lying neglected for many years, its use was limited to a temporary ball-game area. Greenwich Council aims to make it a public open space including a wildlife park with a pond, a performance space and ball-game facilities.

The project is the initiative of local residents backed by the council and community groups such as the Greenwich Mural Workshop (GMW). Carol Kenna from GMW said: "This project has been six years in the making, but thanks to the patience and involvement of local people, it is about to come to fruition."

The project will be funded mainly by the Creekside SRB Pro- gramme and Greenwich Council. Community organisations, including Hughes Field Tenants Association, Deptford Adventure Playground and Greenwich Community College, will also help.
