POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man died from serious head injuries following a daylight attack in a churchyard. George Marchbank was left bleeding and unconscious after the attack in St Mary's churchyard off Lewisham High Street, on April 30. A friend, who went looking for the 40-year-old, found him and he was rushed to University Hospital Lewisham but, despite showing signs of improvement, died on Sunday last week.

A post-mortem at St George's Hospital Tooting showed he died from the injuries suffered in the beating. Police believe Mr Marchbank was attacked between 2pm and 3.30pm and shoppers who use the churchyard to get access on to the High Street, may have seen something.

Witnesses should call 0181 778 2375 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Brian Adlam, of Westbourne Park Road, will appear at Greenwich Magistrates on Friday charged with murder. A second man has been arrested in connection with the case.
