REPORTS of a grave amongst trees in a Deptford Park sparked a police investigation.
Park-user Carolyn Ryan, 53, was walking her dog in Folkestone Gardens when she made the strange discovery. She came across a mound of earth, approximately three feet square, covered in stones and topped with a cross.
She described seeing candles in front of it, which had burnt out, and sugar lumps arranged on the ground.
Mrs Ryan said: "It frightened the life out of me. I couldn't believe it."
The police set up a tent to preserve the find and closed the entire park for part of the following day.
A Met Police spokesman said: "We were called to reports of what appeared to be a grave. On arrival, we found a mound of earth with a crucifix on top and are satisfied there was no crime and no evidence of suspicion for us to take it further."
