Colin Walker aims to sign "between four and eight" new players over the summer.

The York City boss has 12 senior professionals on the books, with free agent Craig Farrell yet to agree new terms.

Ten - David McGurk, Danny Parslow, Martyn Woolford, Simon Rusk, Richard Brodie, Jimmy Beadle, Ben Purkiss, Darren Kelly, Mark Robinson and Onome Sodje - featured in Saturday's final game of the season at Salisbury.

Goalkeeper Josh Mimms stayed on the bench during the 3-0 away defeat and Nicky Wroe missed out because of injury.

Walker will also have four first-year professionals in Andy McWilliams, Liam Shepherd, Josh Ratcliffe and Danny Stimpson, but is intent on strengthening his squad in the coming weeks.

The City boss has previously indicated the club might carry an 18-man squad next season and he said: "I'm looking to bring in between four and eight new players. We know we need to get better players in and we will do that over the summer.

"We conceded another goal from a set-play on Saturday and we need to get better players in there. That's what I've been working on and, hopefully, in the next couple of weeks, I will have a couple of signings.

"Next season will be a big season for the club with a number of good players coming to the club hopefully.

"We will have a better team for our first friendly on July 8."

Walker has challenged the current squad to return "mentally stronger".

He said: "We cannot seem to cope against teams who play a certain type of football on certain types of pitches. Salisbury put the ball in great areas and we defended very poorly, which happened at Histon as well.

"We also failed to put the ball in the back of the net with some fantastic opportunities and had an end-of-season look about us. That's totally unacceptable, but how many times have I said that since losing the FA Trophy semi-final to Torquay and that's all about mental strength."

Walker admitted playing Tom Evans, despite informing the 'keeper he will not be retained next season, might have been a mistake.

Walker said: "Hindsight is brilliant. I felt Tom had played really well in the last month and deserved his chance in the last game. It might be a decision I got wrong, but Josh Mimms will get his chance in the future. I also wanted to play Manny Panther as I had no midfielders, but he could hardly walk with an ankle injury."

Walker was frustrated that the season ended on a flat note for City's loyal travelling band of supporters, saying: "Our away support has been fantastic and I'm disappointed that's what they will go away for the summer with."

Two questions. Did most of CWs retained list play and lose heavily at Salisbury? Does the signings of Rusk,LFW,or Duncum give any confidence to you regular supporters of the managers ability to recruit the correct players needed to challenge from the off next season? Cos that is what has to happen to get back to 3000 plus crowds by October. We must be seen to be challenging from day one of the new season. He must also stop messing around with too many confusing perms of playing eleven men to kick a bag of wind about.
CW's dabbling in the transfer market, have left me fearing the worst in his ability to spot a player & the clamouring of many " knowledgeable" supporters to sign up the "failures" of Wrexham FC as left me bemused?2009 aint going to be a lot of fun!

Okay, I'll bet you Neil Redfearn will not be in charge at York in the next 12 months.
I'd take a rough punt that he'll never manage York.

As I suggested on Friday, if Rotherham are in trouble it might be possible to get in Andy Warrington. He's 32 now so may not attract as much attention from clubs in the league. Spend a bit more on wages in the key positions to remedy the obvious problems.

Has anyone kept a tally of the no. of goals conceded set pieces this season (or last for that matter)? I cannot see us seriously improving until we have a keeper who commands his area and comes for the ball with authority. And it doesn't matter a fig whether we play three, four or five at the back if no one picks up the runner at corners and wide free kicks.

I see Neal Bishop is baling out at Barnet in spite of being offered improved terms. Clearly regards himself quite highly.

i don't understand why he kept the diabolical back line together. individually they are of a reasonable standard, but together they are a laughing stock. the squad limitations for next year will make it very difficult to get in the tall commanding centre half we so desperately need, seen as we already have 7 defenders. i'm not a fan of walker and never have been, hopefully he can recruit some good players in the summer and prove me wrong. Any opinions out there on who we should sign ?

Got to agree with sinkingship,I endorse all his negattive coments.
Walker just gave LFW a practice match for the Cambridge playoffs.
Even with the limited budget we have surly we can appoint a manager with a bit more bite than he has.
Why did he give the players 2 days off this week after the 'lucky'win against Farsley'they matched us easily in that game, thats a disgrace. They should have been trying to work out how they let yet another set piece goal in.
walker has had 5 months to sort out the dead ball situation and its no better now than when he took over.
Only positive thing i can come up with is the fact that the 1500 or so loyal fans will turn up rain or shine, but i fear the worst with this clueless manager in charge next term.

The thing is, defending set-pieces is as much about what you do on the training ground as it the players on the pitch.
The likes of Kelly, McGurk and Parslow, with a more commanding keeper behind them, should be excellent for us IF the necessary work is put in to the organisation.

I'll give Walker till December before he's out. Same old Same old. No creativity, defensively weak, out fought and out thought on too many occasions. How the hell can he explain playing Panther and Evans!! He'd have been better off giving 2 of the loyal fans a game. Sorry to be negative but Walkers shown too many weaknesses already in his reign for me to have any confidence in him. He keeps going back to the Torquay defeat and how results have changed since then. Forgive me Colin but isn't it part of your job and the response of a good team to get them playing again and keep their heads up. The buck stops with you fella

At least CW has plenty of time to put his own side together so I think we should allow him to build his own squad. We really do need a couple of GOOD defenders and similar MIDFIELDERS. I appreciate that at this level we ain't gonna get real quality but we need some strength. The kids are coming through OK but they are only young and need time to get physically stronger. If possible, I think we need some proper experperience to help the youngsters along. A few more trips to the gym might help with those muscles!!!

Think we played that at Torquay, with Purkiss and Beadle in midfield we have no creativity !!

Set pieces have been an issue for the last 4 years or so. If there is a set piece school, the whole team should attend! It's like the attacking situation we had. Several strikers on the books then we get LFW. Nothing against the guy but what was the logic in that? Maybe with all those defenders and "better players coming in" we might go for a 7-2-1 formation.....

Worried now, we already have 7 defenders ready for next season.....

Our biggest problem this year has been defending so should they all be worth new deals ??

Are they all going to 'deal with set piece' school' this summer ????

Saturday was a disappointing result and we deservedly lost. We used completely the wrong tactics in the first half (up in the air playing around LFW)and improved considerably in the second half when LFW came off and we changed shape. We lost it in midfield (understandable without any real midfielder) which put more pressure on the defence. Most York fans were amazed that Evans was in goal. I wish him well but again his performance was questionable. Salisbury are a good side but nothing special- we have to beat these teams if we are to compete. All in all a long trip for a disapointing result and an even longer drive home. CW has a lot to do in the summer as without severe strengthening we will struggle in 08/09.
