YORK City have released club captain Manny Panther after three years with the club.

Panther, who turns 24 next month, was offered a new deal in January but that has since been withdrawn with Anthony Lloyd, Ross Greenwood, Alex Rhodes and Chris Hall also failing to make Walker's retained list.

The five players follow Darren Craddock, Stuart Elliott and Tom Evans out of the KitKat Crescent door after they were told they would not receive a contract extension earlier this week. On-loan forward Leo Fortune-West will return to Cambridge United following this afternoon's trip to Salisbury City.

Striker Craig Farrell, meanwhile, has been offered new terms but is yet to commit himself to City and is entitled to a free transfer under the Bosman ruling.

Otherwise, Walker has exercised his option to secure the services of eight players for next season.

They are Onome Sodje, Richard Brodie, Mark Robinson, Ben Purkiss, Nicky Wroe, Danny Parslow, Josh Mimms and Jimmy Beadle.

Martyn Woolford, David McGurk, Simon Rusk and Darren Kelly were already contracted to City until next summer, meaning that Walker now boasts 12 senior professionals should Farrell move on.

The City boss has also handed Andy McWilliams and Liam Shepherd first-year professional contracts, along with defenders Josh Ratcliffe and Danny Stimpson.

Panther has made 132 appearances for City after leaving Partick Thistle in 2005.

A number of Blue Square Premier clubs are believed to be interested in his signature and Walker said: "Manny was offered a new deal in January and turned it down.

"He's had a good time at York City over the last three years and maybe he needs pastures new."

Lloyd, 24, has been released by the club for the second successive summer having re-signed in September from Farsley Celtic four months after being freed.

He played 24 games under Walker, who said: "Lloydy was a very difficult decision.

"He's an absolutely fantastic person. The emergence of Andy McWilliams, though, was one of the reasons behind the decision."

Walker has also warned Farrell that delaying over his new contract might mean City look elsewhere.

He said: "There's not a timescale on it but I think it's a very good offer.

"While he's debating on whether to take it though, somebody else might come along and take his place."

Second-year youth-team apprentices Russell Spence and Matthew Johnson have also been released.

Walker said: "I wish them all the best with whatever they do. Our budget means we can't keep everybody and you need to prioritise."

People are moaning about Manny's performances but at least he played on through injuries, which is more than can be said about Farrell. How on earth has a man with a heart as big as a pea been offered a new deal? I personally hope he turns it down and goes elsewhere. It also appears that Tommy Evans has been deemed responsible for the set piece problems considering he's the only one of the regular back line to be jettisoned. With at least 12 already coming back, it doesn't leave a lot of room for Walker to bring in some much-needed fresh blood to the squad.
Panther was clearly not interested of late, & true he has been playing with an injury. To berate Farrell for not doing so is nonsense! He can only play if selected & therefore the size of his heart has little or no importance!
Maybe CW had eyes on next season(?) & was trying to look after one of the players he plans on keeping, if Manny plays against us it would be better if he was injured.

I'm sad to see Manny go. I know he was a long way from his best for most of the season but who wasn't ? I think he has been fantastic in his 3 years with the club and wish him well for the future. I just hope walker has some good replacements lined up. I agree about Farrell as well who needs a striker that can't finish or stay fit or stay onside or clear the first man on a dead ball ? hopefully he'll turn down the contract and we can get a better forward in.

I suspect Farrell has been offered a reduced deal.

You can't have been there on tuesday then when as usual he was avoiding challenges and jumping out of tackles, losing the ball and then not trying to win it back

So what would happen if he had gone flying into those tackles and broken a leg or finished his career? Without a contract I dare he would be fudged. Wouldnt be surprised if this was on the mind.

Thanks for your previous seasons Manny, shame you couldnt perform so well this year. Good luck

12 players - who an earth will want to come here to make up a decent squad!? We need to try and get some experienced midfielders say Paul Gascoigne or Ronnie Whelan to teach the youngsters a thing or three. CW has got to go too, he's hopeless - Get Redfearn in to get some passion into the team for next season and maybe get him playing again too.

I think for once Walker has it spot on with this list of players, but to be honest anyone who has attended B C all year could have come up with this.
Good luck Manny you gave us a lot of loyalty over your 3 year term.
Why waste time with Faz ? get rid Colin he's a waste of time and space.

bye then manny!panther was a total disgrace this season with his lack of commitment in tackles, sideways passing and 90% of the time losing the ball when in possesion.I presume that the comments on here will be that he'll be a big loss but he won't,trust me.
