GOALKEEPER Tom Evans has left York City but believes teenage rookie Josh Mimms boasts the potential to become his successor at KitKat Crescent.

City boss Colin Walker has released Evans, Darren Craddock and Stuart Elliott with further departures expected in the coming days.

Mimms, who will be back between the sticks for tomorrow's final game of the season at Salisbury, is one of a number of players waiting to learn whether he makes Walker's retained list for next season.

But Evans, who made 291 appearances for Football League side Scunthorpe before joining the Minstermen two years ago, believes the former Liverpool apprentice is worth a new deal.

He said: "I know Josh played a couple of games and then Col took him out because we were beaten heavily but he could have stayed in and done a perfectly good job. He's a good 'keeper and a nice lad."

Evans will leave the Minstermen having made 96 appearances in two seasons for the club but he has struggled for form this term after an impressive first campaign ended with a crucial misjudgement in the play-off semi-final, second leg at Morecambe.

The 31-year-old stopper insisted, however, he did not carry that error as a hangover into this season, saying: "It was one mistake and you can't worry about those things. I felt I did all right last season and maybe not so well this season but it was nothing to do with that at all.

"It's tricky to say what it was down to. The team didn't do as well either despite having a lot of the same players and maybe, some would say, a better side.

"I think you need to look at how all the lads have done since Col took over and, aside from the last month, there's been a massive improvement, so maybe it was something to do with that. I'm disappointed to be leaving but that's the way things go in football. I'm sure it's nothing personal and Col's been fine with me."

Despite finding himself surplus to requirements at City, Evans is determined to carry on playing in the professional game.

He added: "At my age, they say you are coming to your peak as a goalkeeper so I definitely want to carry on playing. It's something I love doing and want to carry on doing for as long as I can.

"I've been in touch with a few clubs and we will see what happens because not everybody has decided what they are doing with their staff for next season yet.

"I'm willing to travel but it depends what for. I'd have to balance it up if I was having to travel miles away and seeing very little of my family. I coach Scunthorpe's under-13 team and enjoy it but coaching is for the future. I'm not looking for a coaching job."

About his decision to release Evans, Walker said: "Tom has been a model professional during his two seasons here and he's the hardest-working goalkeeper I've ever seen.

"I just think we need to bring in somebody younger for next season."

Has Colin Walker freed the right men and who else should go?

good to so many people happy to see us loose so many players. just one poin though who the hell is going to want to play for us. a recognised mid table confrence side with no ambition. dont think it will be long before col is shown the door and neil relagation redfearne is put in charge. either way i wont be there. so good luck city see you when you grow some balls

Urm 'dead wood' yep, agree should go but not the backbone of the team, this chopping and changing is detrimental for the team, just look at the start of this season, maybe he should take a leaf out of Bob Paisley's book, the great Liverpool team of the 70's didn't swap and change, never seen anything like it, it's like Piccadilly Circus!!

What are you saying then LS....keep them?Cos that would surely condemn us to another fives years in the Conference never mind one.

Hope was a good centre half for us and from that point of view would be a good signing. Didn't like the way he jumped ship last time though.

Procy's a thought but Colin will have scores of players to sift through on the release lists first. Money is tight remember!!

I don't know if this was already common knowledge, based on the above contributions, but I've just seen a report that says Wrexham are getting rid of most of their players. Michael Proctor and Richard Hope (remember him?) are amongst those on an actual transfer list, which presumably means they would want money for them.

Sad to see Tom Evans go, hoped he would have had chance to turn his form around in the close season.
Agree always gave 100% and sometimes that's all you can ask for.
If he made the defence feel jittery can't imagine how he felt stood behind them.
Good luck Tom.
Personally would like to see Henderson back, thought he was quality whilst on loan.

Sorry to see Tommy Evans go but I think it was inevitable bearing in mind his inconsistency this season. I think he always put a lot of effort in, and this was appreciated by the 'Shippo' fans who were chanting his name on Tuesday. It's a pity Michael Ingham is no longer at Wrexham - he could possibly have been persuaded to come back under the circumstances but I think he moved on to Hereford so there's no chance now. Being realistic, it's doubtful if a club in City's position would be able to attract someone of his calibre anyway.
However, there's that striker they've got at Wrexham - Michael something or other - who would be a good acquisition.

No City supporter will be suprised at the three players released. Of course more will follow, (Lloyd - Robinson - Greenwood - Rhodes - Farrell, to name a few).I really wont be suprised if both Panther and Sodje, also leave, as I dont think their heart is in the club. But releasing players is the easy part of Management,as Colin Walker will discover, it is who you bring in that matters. All of the big money is with the Southern clubs in the Blue Square Premier, so Northern clubs have to operate on smaller budgets, and tend to struggle. We at York City are desperate for success, and attendences would soar if this was achieved, but I fear that it could be more of the same.

Who cares. Anyway back to the main topic - LFW has got to go - just because he scored 1 and set up the rest in our 4-1 win doesn't mean he's right for us - he's a disgrace and needs to be got rid of - give Sodje and Brodie a chance up front - both keen and eager and let them forge a partnership in pre-season and take it from there.
Looks like Rotherham may be back in trouble, so there may be a few bargains to be gleaned
No chance pal - even though the wages are slightly higher, there's no way the Board will pay anywhere near what they're on now.

Rodney Rowe - Dinga hasn't got a clue about a lot of things but as for you.....thick cretin -errrr just because he is on loan doesn't mean to say that he's definately on his way. I spoke to NR and he says that CW wants to do all he can to keep LFW to nuture the young lads up front, you clever get.

Not sure that they would look to stay on that sort of money. You're probably right about O'Grady and Hudson - they'll likely generate interest from above anyway, but Holmes and AW must be coming to the tapering end of their careers, so they may not get too many offers. In that sense it's probably better in terms of self-marketing to get promoted out of BSP than to be relegated into it.

LFW and Faz out
Bruce Dyer from Chesterfield in, he can help the progression of Sodje and Brodie

Looks like Rotherham may be back in trouble, so there may be a few bargains to be gleaned from South Yorkshire. O' Grady or Holmes up front would be better than LFW, if Manny goes Mark Hudson would be useful and AW has kept 13 clean sheets this season. Thoughts?

there are few teams who have a free scoring front two - I would argue that Faz makes the perfect foil if we could find someone who can bag a few for next season, or if Brodie or Sodje can push on a bit and fill the role.

Tom may not have been so super this season but he has always given 110 percent, as too did Craddock and Elliot.

As for the rest, I think McWilliams' emergence ends Lloyd's City career, although I'd keep Robinson. Farrell cannot stay fit enough to warrant a new contract, while Manny may decide he's done all he can at York. The more intriguing question is - who is coming in?

yorkcity07, york says...
10:51am Fri 25 Apr 08

To answer the press question, yes Col has done the right thing releasing these three and i agree with Imp that Lloyd (possibly Robbo aswell) Greenwood Rhodes and Faz should be released, Faz because for all his effort he just doesn't do what he is paid to do enough - score goals

lmp, York says...
10:35am Fri 25 Apr 08

Lloyd, Greenwood, Rhodes and Farrell will all be released.
