York City boss Gary Mills happy on striking it rich
12:00pm Friday 31st August 2012 in News
By Dave Flett, Sports reporter
Gary Mills
YORK City manager Gary Mills might have been thwarted in his attempts to bring Richard Cresswell back to Bootham Crescent – but he is happy with his striking options prior to tonight’s transfer deadline.
Mills brought in 33-year-old Scott Dobie on a three-month contract to reinforce his front line this week and, while admitting the former Carlisle and West Brom forward is not fit enough to feature against Oxford tomorrow, he does not plan to further bolster his attacking ranks.
With centre-back Clarke Carlisle and Leeds United left-back Charlie Taylor also joining Dobie as City’s new arrivals, Mills does not now foresee any further business today.
The approach for Cresswell, who netted 24 times in 111 games for City before leaving for Sheffield Wednesday in a deal worth £950,000 in 1999, failed to materialise when the former England under-21 international decided to stay on at Bramall Lane as a player-coach on an improved contract.
On that matter and the club’s attacking potency, Mills said: “We made inquiries about Richard Cresswell but nothing came of that. I wanted that type of experienced player to come here but, while everybody has been going on about needing to get a striker in, it’s not been a major issue for me.
“We’ve averaged two goals a game during our first three League matches and I will be more than pleased if we keep doing that. We had a couple of knock-backs from strikers and I’ve also had the opportunity to bring in younger players but I didn’t feel that was right.
“I know what a great professional Scott Dobie is as well and, while he won’t be in the team tomorrow, we will be working to get him fit and ready for games. He’s hungry to do that and that’s the most important thing for me because, if he wasn’t, he wouldn’t be here.
“The main priority, though, was to get a new centre-back in after Chris Doig got injured and we’ve addressed that by bringing Clarke Carlisle in. I don’t think there will be any more comings or goings now, although there might be a couple going out when the loan window reopens in a couple of weeks’ time.”
Carlisle, who has agreed terms until the January transfer window, is expected to be handed his full debut for City at home to Oxford tomorrow with Doig joining David McGurk , who has suffered a heel problem after recovering from his previous knee injury, in the treatment room.
The City chief is also keen to continue using Dan Parslow in a midfield anchor role, adding: “I would be very reluctant to move Pars out of midfield. He seems to be getting better and better and thriving in that position more and more.”
On-loan teenage left-back Taylor, an England under-19 international who is at Bootham Crescent for a month initially, could also start against the table-topping U’s as Mills considers whether to select him ahead of Jamal Fyfield and Danny Blanchett, who have both started two of the club’s opening four fixtures in the role.
Mills said: “Charlie could start tomorrow because I think he’s a good player and I like the look of him.
“That left-back position has not really been settled in the first few games so it’s more competition for the other two.”
As well as McGurk and Doig, City will continue to be without Jamie Reed , Oli Johnson and Scott Kerr for tomorrow’s game with Mills admitting the match is the first in a challenging week for his team.
Following the Oxford game, City travel to Rotherham for the first round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday night before entertaining newly-relegated Chesterfield next weekend.
On that schedule, Mills said: “Oxford are a good side. I went to watch them at Leeds in midweek and they looked lively.
“I can see why they have won three games but, if we play how we can, we can beat them.
“It will be a testing week with games against Oxford, Rotherham and Chesterfield but, without meaning any disrespect, that’s better than having Barrow, Ebbsfleet and Hayes and Yeading.
“We want to enjoy the challenge of League Two football. I don’t want an easy life and we all know we have got to work hard for what we want to achieve.”

Would be really keen to hear thoughts on what if anything is going on with Blair, and whether you think he'll be back starting soon.

How can things be bad goal wise if Matty Blair can't get a game despite being fit for 3 games? Anyone know why he's still not getting picked, are the others really better, and OK they've done well to date, but dont you go with your best guys when fit?
I thought Blair would be top scorer again this season, and yet now Im not sure if he'll even get close to 15 let alone 20. Any predictions on his total this season?

Maybe the 'problem' - if you call call it a problem - is that Coulson and Chambers are doing so well. I think Blair is one of our best players, but you can't really replace Coulson/Chambers when they're doing such a good job.
Any views on why Matty Blair isnt starting, surely that adds potency to the side? He must be fuming not playing after what he did to reach this level. I know he missed some of pre season, but shouldnt he be starting by now? The others have done well without him for sure, but I reckon York are better with Blair on the pitch. Any worries he'll leave if this bench time continues?

yeah I thought that must be it too Luke, but say you're Man United, and Welbeck and Hernandez have been scoring while Rooney returns to fitness. When he's fit, he comes back in even if the other guys have scored while he couldnt play. I just think it's a bit weird he hasnt played earlier in games. I think he came on at 90mins in the last match, which doesnt exactly ease him in or help with match fitness. Just find it a bit strange, but agree Chambers doing well.

I was looking for Duffy's result prediction for to-morrow - he guessed it accurately last week! A draw looks tempting but we should lift our game to-morrow, so how about another 3-1 to us and we get a last minute breakaway goal from Jason Walker!! On the manager and his buys - since moving here in October, 2010, he's done a fine job for us and we must get behind him and the team - we are good enough for other sides to do the worrying! COYR.

Walker has started to settle into the season and his control and link play are coming back.
Let's not let the doom-mongers Fraser their way into our collective psyche. We should still be following the Olympic opening song and looking on the bright side. 2012 that's May 20 and 12. It doesn't mean we have to crack a smile tho' but tha' knows. But surely we need to give the new boys a chance and I don't just mean this week's signings.

So the risk is limited. Although we've apparently missed out on some possibilities I'm comfortable that we're not being stupid with budgets.
Time to get on the road.
