Time for calm says York City chief Gary Mills

YORK City manager Gary Mills has instructed his players not to get caught up in the emotion of the club’s return to Football League action.

The Minstermen will end eight years as a non-League outfit when they kick off their 2012/13 campaign against Wycombe Wanderers at Bootham Crescent tomorrow and Mills is hoping the “party atmosphere” can inspire rather than distract his team in the quest for three points.

A bumper home crowd is expected for the League Two curtain raiser but Mills is only focused on getting off to a winning start.

He said: “The majority of players from last season are still here so tomorrow will be a fantastic feeling for everybody at the club and we are really looking forward to it. A lot of people have worked hard for this day and some probably thought it would never come.

“I am delighted we are at home first because our fans deserve that and I am looking forward to having a party atmosphere to boost the lads to get three points. But we’ve not got to get carried away by it all and must treat the match like another game where we are out to get three points to get off to a good start to the season.”

City will be without long-term injury casualty Scott Kerr against the Chairboys, as well as striker Jamie Reed , who will be sidelined for a month with a hamstring tear.

Right-back Lanre Oyebanjo , meanwhile, returned to training yesterday after his thigh problem, while John McReady and David McGurk have recovered from illness but the latter is still short on match fitness and summer signing Oli Johnson is also doubtful with a groin problem.

Mills added that he felt his team would not be daunted by tomorrow’s historic occasion or future mouthwatering clashes against the likes of derby rivals Bradford City and Rotherham following the step up in divisions.

He said: “The players will not be overawed – not at all. We had the same big crowds last season, particularly towards the end when we had some massive, massive games.

“It’s a case of the more fans the merrier because I think our players will thrive on that.”

Despite the Minstermen being written off as 33-1 hopefuls for the League Two title, Mills is also very clear about his targets for the new campaign.

“Promotion is what I am aiming for because I want to make progress again and take this club forward to League One,” he said.

Not stupid, just frank and honest!!

I don't want to stand with someone who was supporting Man utd or Leeds last season.

If you do that's fine and before you say extra revenue, a extra 20 glory supporters is not going to buy that extra striker we need!!

Sorry mate, whilst I get (I think) where you're coming from you're wide of the mark.

Success on the pitch brings with it the fans, and though I get that you're probably a die hard, some fans will respond to the good times. Always have done (remembering average crowds of 2k and less in the late 70's, early 80's) always will....

I doubt if those you aimed your comments at really wore Man U / Chelsea / Man City shirts or whatever, just waiting until better quality football (hopefully) arrives

Welcome back one and all!!

You're on your own - I guess not for the first time!
And out of order.
Anyone who stumps up for two season tickets is more than welcome.
As, in my book, is anyone who pays on the day - especially if they get behind the team.
Doubtful you could be classed a true supporter I guess!

i see 2 or 3 players still not fully fit.i only hope we hav,nt signed a crock in oli johnson.just read he is doubtful with a groin strain.he was on the subs bench at doncaster, but didn,t get on.so what has happened between then and now.it does make you wonder why oxford united got shut of him.

Happy people are thinking of coming back to watch City again - as far as I'm concerned, it was their loss not showing up to the games for the last 8 years! Some of it has been extremely entertaining, and our conference spell ended with our most successful season ever! Can't imagine City having too many glory supporters anyway, surely our entire fan-base showed up for Wembley?

indeed you are not.

I asked the same question earlier this week but was jumped on (by phil leeds) for giving abuse and for " for not agreeing with his point of view" but yes paul2012 has welbeck written all over his post. not to worry he will crawl back in his hole once we start winning, just like last season.(if it is welbeck )

hi paul, while i understand your frustration at "glory supporters" instead of letting your ego about "supporting york through the hard times" get in the way why dont you think about the benefits?

returning/ new supporters means more money through the door, drinks meals, tickets etc which gives security to york city as a business

more supporters = better feeling for the team, and more of a case for the monks cross 2 stadium york city need so badly

the better atmosphere goes without saying.

whats more important? , how you feel or your team?, because one things for sure, your commitment to york would mean nothing if york never bought in new supporters whether from years ago or last season. you have the new supporters to thank for keeping the team going strong

i am actually 23 which means the last time i saw york was when i was 15,

i have been looking forward to seeing york play again since then but always put it off,

now i have finally done what i have wanted to do for a while ,come to support my team

i bought 2 tickets for me and my mum around £260 pound each .. i can take that money elsewhere if it would make you feel better?

also i don't support anyone else
