Mills: Cork City not taking over Liam Henderson's contract

CORK City have made an inquiry for Liam Henderson , but York City boss Gary Mills has dismissed reports the striker’s contract had been bought out.

It was reported yesterday that the 22-year-old was set to be on his way out of Bootham Crescent with the League of Ireland champions having taken over the final year of his deal with the Minstermen.

Henderson was a second half substitute in York’s 6-2 pre-season victory at Pickering Town last night and Mills said initial contact from the Irish side was as far as it had gone regarding the former Watford man.

“There’s no truth in it,” he said when asked whether Cork had taken over Henderson’s contract.

“The only truth is that Cork have made an inquiry about Liam.

“That was over the last couple of days and that’s as far as it has gone so far. There’s nothing as far as buying up his contract is concerned.”

Mills, meanwhile, said he was delighted with the progress of his team as they completed their third pre-season friendly at the Northern Counties East League Premier division outfit.

Looking back over the first three matches so far, Mills added: “It’s great. The three games have been superb for us. Not only the games. It has been lovely to come out, be among the fans, and meet new people. We have been made so welcome.

“Since I started to work at York I have met some lovely people and Huntington , Harrogate and Pickering have been fantastic. Everything about it has been perfect for me.

“It has been three great work outs. We’ve scored 17 goals, conceded two (last night) which we are disappointed with because we want to keep clean sheets.

“Sometimes, when lads are enjoying the games, they might just lose that discipline because they are looking to score more. But it was more about the fitness and getting the workout. It has worked perfectly for me.”

“It’s nothing major,” Mills said of the goals conceded. “They have got a few good players and they played well. All credit to them.

“It’s great that you come to somewhere like Pickering and the play, and the standard of players, is superb. Hopefully, they will continue that themselves in their season this year.

“They made us defend at times, scored two goals and maybe could have had a couple more, so it was a perfect workout.”

Surely given the fact that Liam has not established himself at City this has to be a a bit of business beneficial to all. I think we do need another option up front at this level and am not sure Reed has it in him or GMs faith so we must pursue this interest.

This could be used to enable us to move forward with the signing of another striker so hopefully he moves on sooner rather than later.

As I posted on the other thread Cork are unlikely to buy out his contract at this stage of their season, which ends in October. Much more likely to sign him up in March so that his contract was tied to their summer season. Cork are a supporter owned club just emerging from administration and they have to be very canny with their resources.
