Good news, I can't believe he only played 10 games last season though! Seemed like he was with us half the season - shows he made an impression I suppose. I think Fyfield has a lot of potential as a LB, so not too worried, but we should certainly sign another quality LB 'just in case'...

Also need cover for Oyebanjo at rb. Offer Challinor another year?

excellent news his experience will prove invaluable at this higher level LB has to be a priority now

Good signing. Doig impressed me every time I saw him play. Now let`s get Challinor on board ! Still mystified why Meredith has gone to Bradford City..........

1:04pm Mon 2 Jul 12

great to get him signed up but i always thought he would. he looked superb next to Smithy towards the back-end of the campaign and was imperious at Wembley in the play-off final.
i agree, still think a left-back and a striker are needed, any further rumours regarding Connell or are these stories just pure hear-say??

The Legend Of Keith says...

Doig is a crucial signing. Although he may not play every game due to age and injury, his experience behind the scenes and on the training ground will be extremely valuable to the squad.

A left back, a strong midfielder (Smith?) and another prolific striker (Connoll) may complete the squad. Add to this Challinor and Bopp and let's get our season underway!

Time to release Brown and Blinkhorn though and send Henderson out on loan maybe.

Good signing of a player with experience and Cool under pressure.GM and DG are doing well with signings which do appear to strengthen the squad.
I hope Adriano develops well at Cambridge( hope sell on clause in place)and best of luck to the lad who has great potential and wants to play regular football.Still can't see why Mez would want to leave a club on the up for Bradford except for larger crowds.

Good player, good signing.

Yep, LB and a striker should top this off now, with Smith's return a bonus for the midfield strength.

Fine tuning now as we've kept the majority of the best parts of our squad.

Henderson may be a season loan out.

RooBeck says...
1:16pm Mon 2 Jul 12

A cool head and he fits well into GM's style at the back. He lacks a little bit of pace but makes up with his experience and reading of the game and as long as he can stay fully fit, then a good signing. Challinor next? Then, some cover at left-back for Fyfield and a proven, lower league striker should still be on our shopping list!! COYR.

It would be appropriate to have a sub ready for Doig and his injuries but I wouldn't class him as a sub centre-half. He is far too good for that.

Great experience and was solid LY.

Like to see a bit more of Bopp, gotta be worth a 6 month or non contract terms?

I'd have Doig and Smith at the centre of defence until McGurk was back to his best! Definitly need a left back, Fyfield isnt a good enough full back, I prefer him as a centre half! Dont think we need to sign a right back, Oyebanjo and Parslow can both play there, although I'd maybe give Challinor a contract for what he did for us last year he earned one! Brown and Blinkhorn have got to go, not good enough and got enough quality in there positions, Henderson needs more of a chance. Left back, Jonathan Smith and Connell and we're sorted. Come on City!!!

Great news. Just need Challinor and Bopp signed up from last year's squad plus maybe 1 more new one and we'll be ready to go.

Kerr, Paddy Mac, Bullock, Potts, Mcready and possibly J.Smith all midfielders plus Oyebanjo and Parslow who can (and did) play there - do we need another in Bopp? Like others I too would like to see Jon Challinor signed up - he deserves it and he also can play in several positions.

Agreed. He would be my first choice centre half if fit. He forged a very good partnership with Smith and reads the game better than anyone else. Ok he might not have pace but some of the best centre halves we have had have built their success on reading the game.

Just a minor correction- we have still have somebody called Jason Walker and somebody called Jamie Reed from last year, as well as Liam Henderson. And we've signed someone who can play down the middle if Mills wants- Oli Johnson.

So we do have strikers- don't be ridiculous. Whether we need another is a matter of debate, we probably do, but please stop saying we have no strikers.

Johnston and Coulson are more wide players and Henderson won't get near the first team. There is only really Reed who Mills rarely plays so in effect the poster is correct. We need real competition for Walker because we don't have it now.

i agree duffy coulson is more of a winger and oli johnson the same, however i know oli very well he lives in the next village to me near wakefield, when playing for nostell he played as a striker, where as later in his career he moved to being a winger!.
he is lightening quick so will give matty and ashley good competition.

But Johnson can play as a striker, that's all I said. Try reading the post properly. All I was saying - again very clear in my post if you read it - is that we do have at least 2 good strikers, so people who keep saying we have 'no strikers' are utterly deluded.

OB-1 says...

Squad must be nearing capacity, although the number of games this year will be way more than last (Hendo on a cheeky 1-3 month loan to make room?).

The one thing I'd put on my christmas wish list Mr Mills is to see some of the stronger Youth Team players blooded or benched in JP Trophy or League. There are some bright lads in there who could emulate Tom Platt's succession. Hoping he gets a good crack this year.

I can confirm that Jonathan Smith signing still on-going. However, Scott Brown and Matty Blinkhorn will not be returning to #ycfc .

David Ward ‏@thecrescent78
Gary Mills also hopes to complete signing of a striker by the end of the week #ycfc. Mills refused to be drawn on whether it is Alan Connell

I don't think Allan Connell will come to City, as I think he wants to join a team in the South,He has not gone on the pre season tour with Swindon to Italy but neither has Johnathan Smith. So we await and see.

I would argue the defence is the biggest risk. We are relying on both McGurk and Doig staying fit and Oyebanjo and Fyfield making the improvements to their game that needed, add in the fact we have list the best fullback in years at the club and in my opinion that area is going to make or break next season.

Defence could be our biggest risk for next season. Of our CB's, only Doig has any real league experience.

However, I would argue defence is an area that can be bulked up through the season as CB's are easy-ish to pick up. If our strike force doesn't hit the mark then this will be harder to fix!
