Moses Ashikodi released by York City

MOSES Ashikodi and Erik Tonne have become the first players to be told their services will not be required by York City next season.

But manager Gary Mills has not ruled out a return to Bootham Crescent for on-loan Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson and is ready for a battle to retain James Meredith’s services for the club’s first campaign back in the Football League.

Former England youth international striker Ashikodi has been released after only managing three starts and scoring one goal following his November arrival from Kettering.

Tonne also only made the first XI three times after joining on loan from Sheffield United at the end of the January transfer window.

The Norwegian, who netted the goal that secured City’s Blue Square Bet Premier play-off place at Braintree, has now returned to the League One Blades with Mills admitting that he would not be interested in recruiting him again for 2012/13.

He said: “Moses has gone. His move here did not work out as well as we would have liked but we have had no problems with him and wish him all the best for the future.

“We won’t be looking to bring Erik Tonne back either but, like Moses and the rest of the squad, he played his part in our season.

“They all deserve credit for the roles they played, but some more than others.”

Gibson, 19, has signalled his intention to challenge for a first-team place in the Championship at the Riverside next season after a successful three months with the Minstermen.

But Mills will be interested to hear the outcome of the former England U17 and U18 international’s talks with Boro boss Tony Mowbray over the summer.

The City chief added: “He did really well for us and we will see how things go with him.

“I don’t know what will happen at the moment.”

Meredith is entitled to leave the club on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling, which will alert the likes of Crewe Alexandra and Chesterfield, who expressed an interest in his services last summer.

Championship pair Watford and Burnley have also been linked with the 24-year-old Australian.

Said Mills: “He is one I would like to keep and, if other people want him, that proves what a good player he is.

“We will be negotiating with him to see if we can do something on that front.”

Meredith is one of 11 players out of contract at Bootham Crescent.

The others waiting to hear whether they will be offered a new deal at the club are Dan Parslow, Adriano Moké, Ashley Chambers, Jon Challinor, Chris Doig, Jamal Fyfield, Danny Pilkington, Eugen Bopp, Matthew Blinkhorn and Scott Brown.

Like Meredith, over 24-year-olds Parslow, Challinor, Doig, Bopp, Blinkhorn and Brown are all entitled to free transfers under the Bosman ruling while City can look to claim a compensation fee should they offer new terms to Moké, Chambers, Fyfield and Pilkington but the players decide to leave for new pastures.

Captain Chris Smith, contrary to previous reports, is under contract next season along with Michael Ingham, Lanre Oyebanjo, David McGurk, Michael Potts, Scott Kerr, Paddy McLaughlin, Jason Walker, Matty Blair, Liam Henderson, Jamie Reed and Paul Musselwhite.

• Blue Square Bet Premier title winners Fleetwood Town have made their third signing since the end of last season.

Released Crawley left-back Dean Howell has joined the Cod Army following the captures of goalkeeper Chris Maxwell and striker Alex Titchener from Wrexham and Witton Albion respectively.

The first six on the 'waiting to find out' list would all get my vote for either 1 or 2 year contracts. The remaining four, is a tougher call but GM needs to get to work on landing James Meredith's signature on a 2 or 3 year deal. It would be great having Ben Gibson back at City on loan but he does seem intent on winning his way into the Boro senior squad and that might mean him staying on Teesside.

Didn't really shine in a City shirt but there were very occasional glimpses of potential for Moses. However, he was part of a double winning team and no-one can take that away from him. Best of luck with your next club.

No surprise with Tonne.

Good to see Mills starting work on shaping the squad for next season already.

Pilkington has shown some real class at times so Millsy might just stay with him if he can be more consistent.

Moses just didn't quite live to billing but hopefully he will get fixed up soon.

Presume Brown and Blinks are on holiday.

No surprise to see Moses go to be honest and Tonne was only on loan anyway. Need to get Pilkington, Brown, Henderson and Blinkhorn off the books now and hope we can somehow retain the services of Chambers, Blair, Mez and Parslow etc or we could see ourselves with many new faces next season.

No suprise Ashikodi and Tonne let go-I expect Blinkhorn and Brown to follow them. Never saw Bopp but he rarely featured so expect him to go also.We have other options in midfield. As Henderson is contracted perhaps Forest Green or another BSP club will take him on loan. I hope the remainder sign up with City for League 2.Wonder if Jon Shaw whi is available could play with Walker?

Moses Ashikodi was always going to be released, he has been very disappointing. I would like to see Chambers, Parslow and Doig signed up again. But I am not so sure about the others - Moke (has a bit of skill, but he is always going to be on the bench), Pilkington (never seems to take his chance when selected), Bopp (have not really seen enough of him), Blinkhorn (made no impact when selected), Brown (there will be better players available). That just leaves Challinor (he has done reasonably well at right back, but I prefer Oyebanjo) and Fyfield (prone to mistakes, but it will probably depend on if Meredith goes), and finally Henderson (another huge disappointment, but still under contract, it would be nice if we could part exchange him for Jon Shaw). Our main objective has to be to strengthen the Midfield and Striking options.

Thing is if we again play 4-3-3 and I'm sure we will there is no place for another central striker alongside Walker. Shaw will not come to us to sit on the bench so I don't see it.

Bopp was rarely available as he sustained a season ending shoulder injury in just his second appearance.
Shaw was garbage during his first stint in a City shirt and would be just as bad in League 2.

Parslow for me was one of the surprises of the season when he played in front of the back four so will be kept on I suspect as versatile at Centre Back or Right Back. Reed and Henderson under contract for another year so won't be released unless their contracts are paid up, loaned out or somebody comes in for them.

No surprise really, hope we keep good working relationship with Boro, wish Ben all the best he was a good honest lad and diserves his chance in boro's 1st team, they do have plenty of young talent which would equally perform well at York if the chance arise's, one Adam Jackson is a class defender and has played for England u19's, along with a few others on the side lines well worth watching.

It's no surprise at all to see Ashikodi go but he did serve one purpose, him being here took his ridiculous wages off Kettering's wage bill and probably helped them see out the season thereby saving us 6 points and + 11 goals difference. I may be cynical but I believe that is the only reason he was brought here. Of the others, yes, if at all possible keep Meredith and I would also like us to keep Bopp, he was just starting to show his ability when he dislocated his shoulder so I think definitely worth a years contract.

I think Mr Mills should keep faith with those players who took us up. Most of those out of contract did a cracking job and should be given a chance to show something in L2, the likes of Fyfield and Moke didn't start every game but gave us 100% when called upon. Parslow and Doig where fantastic in the second half of the season, Chambers and Challinor are league standard in my opinion so why not offer them a new deal. If Meredith does go (hope not), hope we can get Gibson back for a second spell.

Not as keen on Constable much more combative player rather than a skilled team player.

Alan Pouton and Tony Canham to come out of retirement to play as wingers.

We can all expect to see more players leave and more come in with York spending some money to secure strong, experienced players.

Chambers, Parslow and Moke is a good start for the retention list. Two with lots of potential who can win you games and one solid, dependable and a true professional.

Expect to see Blinkhorn, Brown and Pilkington being the next to go.

Bopp is a tricky one for me. Has a wealth of experience and could be a great cover for Kerr IF he can remain injury free.

Given that EVERYBODY knew that Moses was going to be released it wouldn't surprise me that Moses was told he was going to be released, rather than he had been prior to Mills letting him know.

Just guesswork but I can't see Mills telling random York supporters before he told Moses.

IMO Reeds first touch is like an elephant, he cannot hold a ball up and runs with his head down straight into trouble. All brut force with no footballing brain. Parslow has been a great squad player over the years but he is not a football league player, fantastic bloke and clubman but in my opinion there is better players available. Just because he played the last few matches of the season does not justify his place for next.

I feel for Hereford, relegated and now Foyle. Talk about negative football. I can hear him now talking up teams like Hyde. Unfortunately for them they are doomed to a life in the BSP.
