Boss Gary Mills hails fans as York City clinch return to Football League

GARY MILLS LIFTS THE TROPHY GARY MILLS LIFTS THE TROPHY

MANAGER Gary Mills was quick to heap praise on the Bootham Crescent faithful as York City's promotion party got under way at Wembley.

The Minstermen came from behind - they conceded a goal after only 71 seconds - to beat Luton Town 2-1 in today's Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final thanks to strikes by Ashley Chambers and Matty Blair.

It completed a remarkable Wembley double in the space of eight days, following City's FA Trophy triumph under the arch last weekend.

More importantly, it meant the Minstermen were back in the Football League after an absence of eight years.

Mills said: "I want to thank all our fans who came to support us. I know it's not been easy finding the money to come two weeks running but I'm sure those who did come do not regret that decision.

"For those that stayed at home but have come to games throughout the season, I'd like to thank and congratulate them as well."

* Don't miss The Press tomorrow for the full reaction from Mills and City's players, and Luton boss Paul Buckle's comments on City's controversial winner, plus an in-depth match report, analysis, player ratings and pictures.

Jason 'onside' whilst through on goal and that handball in the penalty box against one offside - I think that's called the rub of the green and I am happy to take it. God knows how many poor decisions we have been on the wrong side of this season.

Back where we belong.
Who gives a to-s if the goal was offside, would not have needed it if we had been awarded the penalty, so as they say decisions even out over the season, therefore 1 against 1 + for = Justice.
Would like to congratulate luton for making a brilliant game of it and in doing so it gives them a chance of winning our other cup next season because we we not be eligible to defend it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fantastic, this has made my weekend! As a Bradford Fan living close to York (disillusioned Bradford fan I must state) it is so refreshing to see such an honest club like York getting back in the league after so long out. I cannot wait for the games against York next season. I believe our manager Parkingson had Walker or Blair on his radar next season but believe me they are better off at Bootham! Wish we had Mills. Best wishes from Bradford City and well done.

What a season!

We got promoted back to the Football League...

We won the FA Trophy...

The club (should) be wealthy enough to make a good crack at the play-offs next season...

We won promotion AND the Trophy at the expense of Luton - I couldn't have dreamed of a better way to success...

We got to dangle promotion in front of Luton then snatch it away! For 25 minutes they had a foot in the League, and we beat them back down again - where they belong.

WHAT A SEASON!!!

That sums it up really doesn't it? Our fans care, and if we'd lost we wouldn't have left the stadium without applauding our team and recognising their effort. Luton gave us a real game today, a fabulous advert for the Conference.

Perhaps the powers that be will now see sense and make it at least 3 if not 4 teams to get promoted from the Conference as there are too many good 'league' clubs in it for too long.

But not us now..... hehey Football League here we come... time to make some new friends

Amazing day at Wembley today can hardly believe it's actually happened! Luton fans silent for 88 minutes practically they were totally outclassed.
We were a bit worried outside the game though due to being donuts and booking a parking space at what turned out to be a Luton based pub! It was very awkward and as much as it killed us we had to act stealthily to keep ourselves and our car in one piece! I also live near Bradford and hope we can develop a healthy rivalry as I know several Bradford fans. Buzzing for next season!

Well done York City, I shall now apply for a season ticket, and as a fit, retired person, shall offer myself for any job that needs doing, painting, scrubbing, whatever, for free. That non-league was awful, but I heard the Chairman getting a bit carried away with 'the finest day in York City's history'. Now come on, I watched Alf Patrick against Raich Carter at Hull in the 40's, with 40000 crowd. Newcastle at Roker Park, Sunderland on a Wednesday in the FA Cup semi-final, 1955. We beat Manchester United at Old Trafford, first leg, Milk Cup I think. We have had some fantastic times, so careful with the dialogue, we have history.

What a completely bitter, misinformed and unwarranted comment. You clearly know nothing of how Luton have been abused by the authorities. Even the Football League admit they made a mess of administering the points deduction. And there are plenty of great people at Luton and it has rich history of being a club that punched above it's weight. BEst thing that happened was them scoring after a minute - didn't the lads respond well, knocking it about, plenty of movement - the rqcists bottled it; second half, I was a bit concerned scoring so early but, again, Luton didn't create many threats - they bottle it again! Parslow was like a colossus - he seemed to be everywhere - actually, the whole team played superbly well. Should we have had a penalty? It doesn't matter now. The City team wanted it more, he fans wanted it more (and the linesman wanted it more!). COYR

Very well done to Gary Mills, Darron Gee and all the players and staff at YCFC and the un-wavering support of the Board of Directors. The challenge and resolve must now be to keep this proud club of ours away from any danger of ever again dropping into non-league football. Having been at Wembley yesterday and enjoying the day, including the massive support for Luton (although a local venue for them) I do not think we should detract from the oppositions effort to get back into the league. They are potentially a big club and I think the third division would benefit from both York and Luton presence. I hope that York will now ensure they are never be relegated again and will go on to even higher levels!

Unfortunately there are a horrible nasty bunch of people and they deserve another year at least in the non league until they sort their fan base out. Some clubs need to look inwards first before others will give them respect. Nick Owen should be ashamed of the club - I say it again horrible people just out to case trouble and if you don't believe me go and read their forum Luton Outlaws - the Avenue of Evil!! Say's it all.

Making our way home from Wembley people looked at us sporting York City colours and they were all genuinely delighted that we had beaten Luton. I honestly had no idea that so many people hated Luton Town. One guy who came from Kettering spent several minutes telling us how Luton think they are too big for the Conference, and he was over the moon that they didnt win. I believe that Luton were basing their confidence on how many tickets they had sold. But the 28,000 left the stadium much quicker than they entered it, didnt they?.

I just had a look on the Outlaws forum - a lot of dejection of course but also acknowledgment that the better team won. Plus a classic - "after yesterday's result I need a Hyde away"! There are of course some decent Luton fans - I saw that yesterday after the game outside the Moore Spice place (where hilariously Luton were down (stairs) and York were up) - but let's not kid ourselves that the coin chucking was a handful of boozed up thugs, there were a LOT of people behaving disgracefully that day.

Actually, I know four Luton fans and they are genuinely nice people. What alienates other fans, though, is the permanent sense of injustice Luton feel when things do not go their way - they feel as though the FA has consistntly and unfairly punished them ( Leeds fans sometimes argue the same) and cannot accept and understand that they are where they are becasue of how the team has played and how the club has been run. The latter point is not the fan's fault (as we well know!), but the false sense of entitlement, and the unnecessarily aggressive and racist behaviour of a number of their fans doesn't help their cause. Of course, it won't be too long before they are back in the League and I will be pleased to see them there but, having seen four of our five games against them this season, we really have been the better team of the two. Every club has thugs, but these people are disgraceful and don't care who they pick a fight with, children, women etc. I was there when they were fighting their way over the railway footbridge at BC. Yesterday a group of old fat gobs purposely came into the premier inn york pub and wanted to cause trouble with chants etc. Fortunately we were not interested and left them to drag their hands across the ground and onto Wembley way. Horrible people, just ask other fans.

i wouldnt hold your breath waiting for an apologie markf i was at Luton that day with my 10 year old son scared to death trying toget back to our car safeley after that tiny minority thousand or so fans ran riot, could have been worse tho i might have been in the directors box getting spat at eh.i like most people had sympathy for the points deductions with were a shamble and said to to Luton fans but tell me how does that equate with giving you the right to scare the **** out of ten yr old kids pal?

We were set upon yesterday by half a dozen gentlemen from Luton. They must have hung around in Wembley car park for at least 45 mins and couldn't wait to start on the two or three family groups that were starting to drift away from the celebrations. It didn't get any further than a few punches and a bit of a wrestle, but why do they need to do it at all? They weren't fuelled by drink, it was just pure hate. Why? Not a copper in sight as usual, by the way.

I'm with you there Bart; its been such a long climb to get out of this league - don't make the trap door any bigger....
Seriously though its the McGill family who deserve so much respect and thanks for their patient, selfless, far-sighted, loyal and almost certainly at times painful and unrewarding support of our club. They have turned the other cheek when necessary but still been able to be positive and creative enough to provide the platform for the campaigns leading up to the pinnacle we've all enjoyed this last 8 days. God bless the McGills! COYR

Just back home in sunny Kilmarnock after a fantastic weekend in London. A brilliant victory against a team with some of the worst fans I've come across in British football. Delighted to be rid of them. Carlsberg don't do muppet fans but if they did.......... Upwards and onwards from here and can't wait for next season. This will make staying up til stupid o clock watching the football league show a worthwhile experience. Well done to the board the players and Gary Mills. Thank you all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a completely bitter, misinformed and unwarranted comment. You clearly know nothing of how Luton have been abused by the authorities. Even the Football League admit they made a mess of administering the points deduction. And there are plenty of great people at Luton and it has rich history of being a club that punched above it's weight. As York remember FA Cup semi fainals and Milk Cup matches, we remember FA Cup Finals and being League Cup champions. If you had any class you'd apologise. If you had any class, that is.
Luton was a very good and proud club many years ago, it is a shame, they don't deserve to be in the position they are now. I would think next season would be the time for them, if they can keep players like Gray. From a born and bread City supporter of over 70 years.
Well said sir, you are a gent, a true football fan and a credit to York City FC. There are plenty of great fans, players and (now) administrators at Luton Town and they are trying to build a sustainable club for the future. For all of us to be tarred as 'scum' and 'evil' is a unfair and unfounded. Sadly, the people here who have typed such messages without engaging their brains first probably find a simple apology is against their nature and beyond their class. The match was played in a great way yesterday, Luton got the rough end of a linesman's blunder, yet all some people can do harp on about events from a few years ago. Luton do not deserve the relegation handed to them, even Mawhinney admitted that and anybody who knows the facts will know that the FA & FL acted atrociously. Luton fans launched a campaign warning the FA/FL against the previous owners being allowed to buy the club. This was easy enough, we went and did some financial homework on the potential buyers and found out that these 'businessmen' were the kind of people that are often found playing "chase the ace" on street corners. Of course, the FA/FL ignored us and when the inevitable happened it was the fans that got kicked by the FA/FL (directors were banned for life from football, marvellous). So wouldn't you feel a bit peeved if you told the police that you were being robbed, got robbed and then ended up carrying the can whilst others filled their pockets? At the end of the day the FA don't care about small clubs. They took Luton down and I hope they never treat another club the way they 'dealt' with us. Maybe one day York City will be purchased by crooks and run into the ground. At that point you might hope other clubs will band together and assist you, instead of trying to kick you while you are down. Some of the comments here are disgraceful and an embarrasment to YCFC.

Marks, with respect clear off to your own site, your team and fans should have been sent to the unibond level league, fined, docked points etc. To go to a match and endure that was beyond the pale, so do one pal.

If you had experienced a bunch of Luton thugs kicking and punching kids (one of them being my son), women and old men like I did at BC then you comment if not then your view is blinkered. Plus if you knew anything about history then you would of known that we have been through our club being owned by crooks - so do one and comment on the Avenue of Evil!!

I've got half a dozen shirts need ironing for Wednesday, would you mind popping over to Haxby?

No, neither do I. But I never made that connection, you invented it. However, on this page all Luton fans have been labelled as scum and evil and, apparently, we deserve only to be allowed to play at the very bottom of the pyramid (Unibond?). I guess you've got your own agenda, unrelated to actual events. A unique double indeed; lacking both brains and class.

What is your honest opinion of the way Luton fans ran on to the pitch and try to attack the York players and fans in the playoffs of 2010. Do you not think you got off without having any fine to pay or points deducted.
