FA Trophy conquest kicks off a ‘massive’ nine days for York City
12:00pm Monday 14th May 2012 in News
By Dave Flett, Sports reporter
YORK City manager Gary Mills hopes lifting the FA Trophy was the start of a momentous nine days for the club.
Second-half goals by Matty Blair and Lanre Oyebanjo saw the Minstermen end a 90-year wait for their first national knockout competition triumph with Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Newport County at Wembley.
The Minstermen will now return to the world-famous stadium for the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final against Luton on Sunday, when they will be hoping to secure promotion back into the Football League after an eight-year absence.
Off the field, meanwhile, the City of York Council planning committee meets on Thursday to decide whether to give the go-ahead for Oakgate’s application to build a new community stadium at Monks Cross – a project that is deemed vital for the club’s long-term survival and sustainability.
On completing the first leg of a potential hat-trick of crucial victories, Mills said: “I just hope this is the start of many things for this football club.
“It’s a fantastic club and a great city full of lovely people. The ultimate aim is to get promoted but we talked about winning the Trophy from the moment we entered the competition and we were 30 seconds away from getting knocked out in the first game (before Jon Challinor’s late equaliser against Solihull) so to win it feels great and a superb start to a massive nine days for us.
“On Thursday, we will learn whether the stadium has been given the go-ahead and it is clear we have to move on. It’s not just about people coming through the turnstiles in football any more.
“You need more to progress and even survive as we have seen with a lot of teams so it’s a big day on Thursday and a massive one on Sunday. My job at the start of the season was to get York City promoted and we want to pull that off.”
Having been cheered on by almost 8,000 supporters on Saturday, Mills is willing fans to turn out in their numbers and full voice again this weekend.
As many as 40,000 Luton followers are expected to make the short trip down the M1 and, while Mills appreciates the cost of back-to-back weekend trips to the capital for his team’s supporters, he hopes members of the Minstermen faithful can be resourceful in their efforts to stump up the cash.
“Our fans were superb,” Mills enthused after Saturday’s showing.
“I remember the difference between winning and losing as a player at Wembley and our supporters do, having lost here the last two times, so it’s great to win the Trophy for them and they will have smiled all the way home.
“I know it’s not cheap to come down and have a day out at Wembley. It’s not easy for them financially, especially because we have got there twice.
“But I hope everyone can make the effort to come to both matches and those who came on Saturday, who thought they could not afford two trips, will probably be ready to trade whatever is on their mantelpiece to come down and support us this weekend.”
Mills believes winning under the arch for the first time will lift the team’s self-belief going into Sunday’s clash against a Luton team they have already beaten three times and drawn once with this season.
He added: “We’ve won five and drawn one of our last six games and that gives you great confidence.
“The players also now know what it feels like to win at Wembley and that’s a great thing to take into the next match.”
Blair further enhanced his reputation as the man for the big occasion when he added a Wembley goal to the two headers that booked City’s places in the FA Trophy and play-off finals.
On his 19-goal top scorer, Mills said: “He never gives up even if his first touch is not the best, even if he puts the ball out of play from a cross, even if he misses a chance or if he falls over.
“It does not bother him and he is always capable of doing what he did for the first goal and he deserves all the plaudits he receives.”
The City manager is hoping, however, that Wembley’s playing surface might be slicker on Sunday, pointing out that the pitch might have played a part in his team’s unsure first-half performance.
He said: “We played into Newport’s hands in the first half and, while the pitch looked wonderful, it would have been nice if it had been watered because the ball was sticking a bit and that did not help us play the way we like to.
“We knew Newport would close us down in midfield quickly and, at times, we were looking for the wrong pass.
“I wasn’t enjoying the way we were playing in the first half but I could not get my messages over. Everyone was saying the Wembley pitch would suit us but you still have to pick the right passes and sometimes have to miss some out depending on the conditions.
“Luckily, we had 15 minutes at half-time in which we could address that and we adjusted and adapted.”
The magical surroundings were to Mills’ liking, however, with the City chief admitting: “There were tears in my eyes when I walked the team out. It was emotional and Wembley does that to you.”
Centre-back Chris Doig failed a fitness test on his groin problem the day before Saturday’s final and now faces a race to be available for the play-off final.
“There was no chance of him playing on Saturday but, hopefully, we will have the option of him being fit for Sunday,” Mills explained.

However, ask yourself this: will York reach Wembley again in the next 10 years?
If we get promoted then the chances are slim. This may be the last time we get there for a considerable time so one last big effort from everyone can help provide a perfect end to the season.

I know there is cost / distance / "Wembley Fatigue(!)" invloved BUT ... I cannot see how anybody with even the vaguest interest in York City can underestimate the significance of this game. Disregard the fact its a "rip off" and - for once - stick it all on your credit card if you have to. Its that important. If we took 14,000 for the 2009 FA Trophy Final that is the minimum we should be taking for this game... is it too late for the McGill's to make some concessions on coach travel or something?? (whilst acknowledging with thanks all the financial support they have given to the club, especially this season) ... My only hope on the "low sales" figure is that there will be a late surge this week of people like myself who have spent the last 7 days drudging up support amongst their mates (I am bringing another 9 including 3 Watford fans!). I know others who are bringing 4/5 etc. There may also be a late run of people who decide that they cannot afford to miss it, whatever the cost - although beware the website does not appear to offer an option for collecting tickets in person from Wembley, seems to be post only but I cannot believe that to be true. Where is everybody getting their ticket sales updates from? I know Luton are publishing theirs on their website but not seen confirmed numbers for us?...
it is alot of money but this group of players have entertained us all season. we need to show our support one more time lets get it to 10k
city have sold 5095 tickets as posted in york citys own website

Personally I dont think its just the prices that are influencing the ticket sales. A lot of people will be put off simply because its Luton. They are certainly not going to be as friendly as the Newport fans are they?. Plus of course this game is televised on Premier TV, people may see that as the safest option. Even the "Pitchside Bar" at Bootham Crescent is charging £3.00 a ticket to watch the game there, no ticket, no admission. I am going to Wembley, I wouldnt miss this one for the world.
They are utterly obsessed with us. Especially that "J Crew" who is apparently a Chip Shop server.

Our credit card will just have to take the strain as will Wembley doors when Mr Lawless loses it along with 25000 Luton fans.
No matter how many can make the trip it will be a quality team supported by quality fans & hopefully a day we can all remember wherever we cheer our team from. Cmon City!!!
Just hope Paul Buckle behaves a bit better than the previous incumbent & sets a good example for their supporters.

Surprised about the low sales so far, despite the cost. I genuinely thought we'd be getting 10,000 this time (more than the Oxford final).
The main expense is the cost of getting there though to be fair. Naturally trains are a rip off and its difficult to get a good deal.

If you calmed down all the abusive and spiteful comments on your site, maybe other supporters won`t feel so negative in their attitude towards Luton.

If you think the behaviour of the Luton fans that day was nothing to make a fuss about, it makes me even more worried than I was already. Is that behaviour normal for your lot?
You say 'they were all banned'. I don't remember any reports of 800 fans being banned - when did that happen? Most of them will be at Wembley on Sunday.

Nearly 30,000 Luton fans there - the vast vast majority will be true law abiding citizens. Any City fans causing offence would soon be stamped on by fellow supporters first having a word. There will be no trouble.

I think it was the 89/90 season I played against them for Southend (I spent two years as a pro before injury forced me to retire) for the entire game we had Pies, Hotdogs, Burgers and coins thrown at us by there fans

Big games at Wembley are amongst the most robustly policed and co-ordinated events in the country. There are more stewards than spectators (or so it seems) and with the cctv and no doubt vastly increased police presence, it'll probably be the safest place in London this weekend. The only precautions York fans should take is to avoid pubs other than the Torch (Wembley Park) in and around London (esp. Baker Street).
Let's turn up in force and make it another famous day for our proud club.

Come on York fans I don't know who's going to win on Sunday and given our form under Brabin the great many Luton fans are treating the playoffs as a bonus. Yes what happened 2 years ago was not pleasant but it's now done and dusted let's move on. The Outlaws does have some rubbish written on it but you have to remember it is an open forum so anyone from any club can write on it under the pretence of being a Luton fan. So don't be put off join in what should be a good game of football played by two passing teams and may the best team win. From previous experience, these games are often lost in the first 20 minutes if a team shows nerves. The opening exchanges could be crucial.

I will be at Wembley on Sunday cheering on Luton, why because I happen to have been born in Luton and love my hometown Club and its history. I am sure many York supporters will be doing exactly the same thing as they come from York. I love York as a place, in fact I spent my Ruby wedding there last year, had City been at home I would have gone, because I love football. Like all clubs Luton has its lunatic fringe. I was at the infamous game a couple of years ago, and count it amongst my worst moments at Kenilworth Road. Most clubs have such supporters, we have more than most in this league, because there are more supporters overall than anybody else in this league. I am a 67 year old retired Bank Manager, and if we lose on Sunday I will be in a pretty foul mood, but I will not be violent, I will get over it, and not begrudge York their celebrations. And if they don't go on sale I will just move to where I wanna sit but if I buy tickets in the corner now and then these seats go on sale I will miss out.
Has anyone else managed to buy tickets in blocks 109,110 or 113 and 114 ????
