YORK City lifted the FA Trophy at Wembley today after second-half goals by Matty Blair and Lanre Oyebanjo gave them a 2-0 win over Newport County.
It was City's second Trophy final in three years following a 2-0 loss to Stevenage in 2009 but there was no disappointment this time in what was the first leg of the Minstermen's 2012 Wembley double.
A similar victory over Luton in the Blue Square Premier play-off final next Sunday will make it an historic season for Gary Mills' men.
Newport had shaded the first half but the second half was a different story as City found the gaps in their back line.
A lovely ball over the top by Ashley Chambers after 64 minutes saw Matty Blair beat goalkeeper Glyn Thompson to the ball and lift it over him. He then followed it, arms aloft, but did not need to touch it again as it bounced into the net.
Eight minutes later, Paddy McLaughlin sent Chambers away down the inside right channel, and he drilled the ball across goal for Oyebanjo to tap it home.
Chambers had been everywhere in the second half, while Oyebanjo was named the sponsors' man of the match.
“The fans have been great. Hopefully we can do it again next week,” said Oyebanjo on pitchside.
Captain Chris Smith duly lifted the trophy, and City can now go into next week's play-off showdown in great heart.
They had been deadlocked at 0-0 at half-time, having been unable to get their passing game going, with the bulk of the chances going Newport's way.
Indeed, the Welshmen should have been ahead on nine minutes. Nat Jarvis beat Dan Parslow to the ball on half-way and nudged it forward for Romone Rose to run onto, clean through on goal. However, his tame effort from inside the area was saved by Ingham down to his right.
City came into it, with Paddy McLaughlin seeing a 20-yard effort deflected just wide by Gary Warren, with goalkeeper Glyn Thompson stranded, while Matty Blair had a shot blocked.
But in between times Newport had another chance as Jarvis' cross-shot from 15 yards out to the right of goal went beyond the far post.
Rose also fired over from 25 yards, and Jarvis curled another effort just beyond the far post.
City were unable to get the ball down and play their football, but they nearly opened the scoring as McLaughlin, from a neatly worked free-kick, pinged a left-footer from 25 yards out just wide.
Challinor then brought a decent save out of Thompson after winning the ball 25 yards out – that was Thompson's only real action barring catching a goal-bound Chris Smith header from a first-minute corner.
But again Newport created a half-chance from a long ball, Minshull turning to shoot well wide.
City have generally played better in the second half of games, though, with most of their goals in recent times coming after the interval - and this proved the case again.
Blair and Oyebanjo scored and, while Ismail Yakubu headed onto a post amid a scramble in the closing stages at the other end, Ingham's goal was not threatened too much.

Luton will be a real test next Sunday and their 40'000 fans will be their 12th man.
All of the 'giddy' posters on here who claim to be from outside of the UK should take a minute to think about the real fans who pay to watch York all season round (and thank them for keeping the club going).
In the meantime, just want to say well done City and good luck with the prep for next Sunday. Can't wait!

Just got back from that London and although it was great to see City finally win a trophy, I must say that our performance was as poor as the attendance.

Some people on here seem to forget what the game is about - play football, score goals, get results. Even that doesn't satisfy some people, obviously.
Just a note to 'openallhours' - Chambers made both goals and terrorised their defence in the second half. If you tell them that you're one of City's misery guts fans you might get a special deal at Specsavers.

well heres another city fan following our boys from thousands of miles away here in the philippines, ive got to say im puzzled by open allhours comment about city fans reckoning to be abroad.me ang my 11 yr old son follow every game on the radio beat we can having attended every home game and plenty of away prior yo moving here a year ago both of us getting up at 2.30 am to listen to midweek games what is it with some people on here who cant just enjoy the moment or failing that let others do so hell even duffys happy. fantastic last might but next week is gonna be murder having to listen to mr parker rather than actually being there, i just hope we play from the first whistle rather than wait till half time then maybe even open all hours will manage something positive.

Wonderful win yesterday. Duffy does have a point about the performance in the first half, but we should all celebrate what City have achieved. Very emotional when the final whistle went. Now for Luton.
Like bertieb my emotions were joyful and grateful alongside my fellow supporters on a wonderful occasion.
There are times when the oh-so obvious critiques can wait. Of course the second half was better after an average first 45 - it has been for most of this year; and it is pretty clear that next Sunday's challenge will need a better performance. For goodness sake give everyone chance to celebrate before you confidence fragile,doom-mongers take centre stage.

Most of us enjoyed our day wherever we joined from. And certainly there shouldn't be a queue to join the Frasers on this of all days.
We all know that next weekend is more important but for now although tired, the majority are in the "be happy" camp.

I am all for criticism as long as it's is balanced, what about also singling out the great move that lead to Banjo's goaL
Walker did not have his shooting boots on, but he worked tirelessly for the team and did not do bad. It would have been fatal to have conceded following the second goal and unfortunately for Reedy, who you often criticise, it was not the time to bring on a player who, though often exciting, does not hold the ball up well. It was a time for consolidating rather than go for further goals with the risk of conceding on the break. I agree that if we had still been looking for goals then Walker should have been taken off for Reed earlier, but that was not the case.

now comes the big one, and as the game approaches, neither team can be seperated by bookies or pundits alike. almost identical records, this is too close to call.
will we continue to have the wood over them, or is this finally their time - who knows. but lets get some tickets sold and give them the same level of support once more. then fingers crossed, it's bradford, rotherham, accy stanley and rochdale for us next year!

well heres another city fan following our boys from thousands of miles away here in the philippines, ive got to say im puzzled by open allhours comment about city fans reckoning to be abroad.me ang my 11 yr old son follow every game on the radio beat we can having attended every home game and plenty of away prior yo moving here a year ago both of us getting up at 2.30 am to listen to midweek games what is it with some people on here who cant just enjoy the moment or failing that let others do so hell even duffys happy. fantastic last might but next week is gonna be murder having to listen to mr parker rather than actually being there, i just hope we play from the first whistle rather than wait till half time then maybe even open all hours will manage something positive.

City played the second half like city play. Superb !.....God Bless you Millsy.
But... Beware (this is my Duffy moment) If we play like we played in the first half at the big one, the games over at half time.
They know only too well what we can do in the second half, let's surprise them! ....and do it from the start.
Secondly, I keep hearing that both teams are perfectly matched
......... OH NO they aren't, cast your minds back to the Oxford game.
I know,we're in difficult times,and visiting Wembley twice in a week is unprecedented.
But,...... CITY NEED YOU !
To end on a high, may I take this opportunity to salute all those Newport fans who came to applaud us back down Wembley way after the game. ....BRILLIANT

It was great to finally come away from new Wembley with a win. First half we were poor and failed to get the ball on the ground and play our own game, sloppy defending and not much better in midfield. If they actually had a striker we would have gone a goal down within ten minutes. Thank heaven we had our usual second half and played more like ourselves. Chambers was man of the match for me, Walker had a compleat mare of a game, where has his first touch gone ? We can't afford another first half like that again next week or we are in trouble against a far better team than Newport.
