FA Trophy final, York City 2 Newport County 0

YORK City lifted the FA Trophy at Wembley today after second-half goals by Matty Blair and Lanre Oyebanjo gave them a 2-0 win over Newport County.

It was City's second Trophy final in three years following a 2-0 loss to Stevenage in 2009 but there was no disappointment this time in what was the first leg of the Minstermen's 2012 Wembley double.

A similar victory over Luton in the Blue Square Premier play-off final next Sunday will make it an historic season for Gary Mills' men.

Newport had shaded the first half but the second half was a different story as City found the gaps in their back line.

A lovely ball over the top by Ashley Chambers after 64 minutes saw Matty Blair beat goalkeeper Glyn Thompson to the ball and lift it over him. He then followed it, arms aloft, but did not need to touch it again as it bounced into the net.

Eight minutes later, Paddy McLaughlin sent Chambers away down the inside right channel, and he drilled the ball across goal for Oyebanjo to tap it home.

Chambers had been everywhere in the second half, while Oyebanjo was named the sponsors' man of the match.

“The fans have been great. Hopefully we can do it again next week,” said Oyebanjo on pitchside.

Captain Chris Smith duly lifted the trophy, and City can now go into next week's play-off showdown in great heart.

They had been deadlocked at 0-0 at half-time, having been unable to get their passing game going, with the bulk of the chances going Newport's way.

Indeed, the Welshmen should have been ahead on nine minutes. Nat Jarvis beat Dan Parslow to the ball on half-way and nudged it forward for Romone Rose to run onto, clean through on goal. However, his tame effort from inside the area was saved by Ingham down to his right.

City came into it, with Paddy McLaughlin seeing a 20-yard effort deflected just wide by Gary Warren, with goalkeeper Glyn Thompson stranded, while Matty Blair had a shot blocked.

But in between times Newport had another chance as Jarvis' cross-shot from 15 yards out to the right of goal went beyond the far post.

Rose also fired over from 25 yards, and Jarvis curled another effort just beyond the far post.

City were unable to get the ball down and play their football, but they nearly opened the scoring as McLaughlin, from a neatly worked free-kick, pinged a left-footer from 25 yards out just wide.

Challinor then brought a decent save out of Thompson after winning the ball 25 yards out – that was Thompson's only real action barring catching a goal-bound Chris Smith header from a first-minute corner.

But again Newport created a half-chance from a long ball, Minshull turning to shoot well wide.

City have generally played better in the second half of games, though, with most of their goals in recent times coming after the interval - and this proved the case again.

Blair and Oyebanjo scored and, while Ismail Yakubu headed onto a post amid a scramble in the closing stages at the other end, Ingham's goal was not threatened too much.

It was great to finally come away from new Wembley with a win. First half we were poor and failed to get the ball on the ground and play our own game, sloppy defending and not much better in midfield. If they actually had a striker we would have gone a goal down within ten minutes. Thank heaven we had our usual second half and played more like ourselves. Chambers was man of the match for me, Walker had a compleat mare of a game, where has his first touch gone ?
We can't afford another first half like that again next week or we are in trouble against a far better team than Newport.

For the first time this season I agree with Duffy, and for the first time this season I've posted on this forum. But Duffy tonight is a night to celebrate a historic win in the history of the club. We have never won a major trophy. I do not think this is a tin pot trophy and everyone associated with the club wants to be congratulated. The facts are that Newport didn't have a better striker and we took our chances. Instead of looking at the negatives every match take a leaf out of GM's book and have a positive mindset. We aren't conceding goals easily and sometimes lady luck is smiling with us, and I cannot see us loosing on sunday. It may well be that if we dont start we'll in the first half and concede a goal we are sure to score two in the second. May I also add the Newport and their fans are a credit to the league, which as from next week i pray we will no longer be a part of

Chambers was a joke and Walker had another shocker, but at least we backed Blair to get the first goal and such were the odds that it paid for the day out.

Luton will be a real test next Sunday and their 40'000 fans will be their 12th man.

Two goals, clean sheet and we won the FA Trophy - job done! Yes we weren't consistently at our best throughout the first half, but we certainly clicked into gear in the second and dominated the game. Some people on here must expect perfection for 90+ minutes and a bucket full of goals but that is simply not realistic. Enjoy the moment, give the team positive encouragement and let's get the job done again next week. The players, management & staff are fully committed to the task in hand; and our group who sat together yesterday certainly appreciated that! Come on City!

It was obvious early on that Newport were trying to play to their physical strength and ability in the air, that gave us a real problem for much if the first half especially with their big lumbering number 30 up front. As soon as we started to get the ball down and use some width they were in trouble. I would have Doig back at centre half next week, he just brings a better level of composure in the important games at this level. I was actually quite surprised given Walker was struggling that Reed did not get more of a run out, I would also have liked to seen Moke given 15 minutes to run at them.

Yes, we do need to raise our game a bit for next Sunday and probably settle quicker, rather than letting the opposition come on to us at deeper positions. So, come on City, grip the game early, dictate the play and show everyong what a very good side we are BUT in the meantime, have a couple of good days enjoying this great result. Don't think their no 30 gave us any problem at all, he was rubbish throughout, except at diving until the ref had a word with him about his balatant attempt to get a penalty early on. Smith and Parslow had him in their pockets, admiitedly he put himself about, but our defence were more than a match. However I agree that we started to turn it on once we played on the deck, but I would put that down to Wembley nerves, which hopefuly with this experience will not be so bad next Sunday.

congratulations to York City for winning the FA Trophy, I don,t claim to live outside the UK, I do live outside the UK, and have done for 18 years in Western Australia, but in that time i have tried to help the club out as best as i can, by purchasing merchandise on line, although i realise the monetary value is not the same as purchasing a season ticket. I would have loved to have been at wembley with the thousands of City fans cheering the boys on, but due to work and other commitments it is not possible,my heart is and always will be with York City, I listened to the commentary last night on line, and the impression i got, was a better second half, some comments on here seem to have been made with blinkered vision, one persons views, who I think are constuctive are from Duffy, and the way some people have a go at him,is unfair, even though people are entitled to their own opinion, good luck to City on sunday i will be listening on line, and i am confident they will be in division next season

Sorry to disappoint those with tinted glasses but "duffy" is quite right. Even Matty Blair in his after match interview said that City needed to play better next Sunday against Luton Town. We deserved to win the FA Trophy, by doing just enough to get a win. It was a mediocre first half, by any standards (Guy Mowbray said on the radio that it was probably the worst 45 minutes football he had seen all season) but we put some decent moves together after the interval to earn our win. Jason Walker did look strangely subdued, he desperately needs a couple of goals to regain his confidence. Great atmosphere created by the fans and a fantastic win. I echo the comments about Newports fans, they were gracious in defeat, and they all wished us well in the Play-Off Final. But the next game is much more important for our club, so keep the faith.

YorkCityLuke says...
2:12pm Sun 13 May 12

The point is, that City won't be playing like they did in the first half of the Trophy final when they play against Luton on sunday, so it's irrelevant (and maybe damaging to confidence) to suggest that Luton will maul us if we play the same way. The fact is that we won the Trophy, the performance WAS good enough for the event, and for that reason ANY criticism is totally pointless. If there was ever a time for happy clapper blind optimism, it's now. Anything less is self-indulgent and quite unhelpful to the club in general.

Agreed, the misery gut Frasers who follow our team are falling over themselves to find negatives when we should be enjoying the moment -our first trophy in an absolute age and in many supporters' lifetimes.
Like bertieb my emotions were joyful and grateful alongside my fellow supporters on a wonderful occasion.
There are times when the oh-so obvious critiques can wait. Of course the second half was better after an average first 45 - it has been for most of this year; and it is pretty clear that next Sunday's challenge will need a better performance. For goodness sake give everyone chance to celebrate before you confidence fragile,doom-mongers take centre stage.

Most of us enjoyed our day wherever we joined from. And certainly there shouldn't be a queue to join the Frasers on this of all days.
We all know that next weekend is more important but for now although tired, the majority are in the "be happy" camp.

Great performance. Well done all at City who made this possible. Let's go for the Double and back into the Football League! We've got the drop on Luton.

Well said eborexile, it does my napper in, at a time when we should be celebrating winning silverware, after a good few years of seeing poor football being played at Bootham Crescent, we are now playing good football . We have a good squad who look to play ball to feet football on the whole. The manager is good despite what some of these would be FIFA managers may say, no names! Yesterdays result. performance and support was fantastic!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy it, next Sunday will be more tense but we can do Luton aswell because we have belief .
C'mon City !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spot on with your comments duffy, though I feel we will up it next week. Jason was a bit of a passenger today and Ash was also MOTM for me.
I thought they should have had a blatent penalty first half. I would be interested to take another look at any footage but if that had been city I would have been screaming for it.
Christ man over the 90 minutes we were far the better team, and except for the first 20 minutes or so played some decent football as far as the long ball experts from the valleys allowed, why are you looking for reasons we should have lost. If you are talking about when no 30 went down early on, that was no way a penalty and the ref had a quiet word with him as play went on; but yes we would have with biased eyes appealed if it had been the other way round.
I am all for criticism as long as it's is balanced, what about also singling out the great move that lead to Banjo's goaL
Walker did not have his shooting boots on, but he worked tirelessly for the team and did not do bad. It would have been fatal to have conceded following the second goal and unfortunately for Reedy, who you often criticise, it was not the time to bring on a player who, though often exciting, does not hold the ball up well. It was a time for consolidating rather than go for further goals with the risk of conceding on the break. I agree that if we had still been looking for goals then Walker should have been taken off for Reed earlier, but that was not the case.

Their No 30 was just an old spoiler. Spent too long trying to push our players off the ball and falling over to be truly effective. Surprised he lasted the whole match. I personally thought Gibson had a good game considering he has had an enforced lay-off. Not surprised Doig was left out - given his injuries of late, better to save him for next week's game.

openallhours wrote: Just got back from that London and although it was great to see City finally win a trophy, I must say that our performance was as poor as the attendance. Chambers was a joke and Walker had another shocker, but at least we backed Blair to get the first goal and such were the odds that it paid for the day out. Luton will be a real test next Sunday and their 40'000 fans will be their 12th man. All of the 'giddy' posters on here who claim to be from outside of the UK should take a minute to think about the real fans who pay to watch York all season round (and thank them for keeping the club going). In the meantime, just want to say well done City and good luck with the prep for next Sunday. Can't wait!
Well you didn't get back from the game I watched. Ashley was back tracking and working hard all game. He stepped it up in the second half and came off absolutely knackered. How do the fans keep the club going at York?. We make a loss covered by JPM every year. You have had too much yallop down your throat and not thought out your post very well.
Got back at 9 tonight having dropped dad-in-law and both brothers-in-law (all Stags fans) off en route - they were honorary City fans for the day, as was my sister's hubby (Fulham fan - we've had some good matches against them in the not too distant past - anyone remember the 3-3 at Craven Cottage and how Richard Cresswell tormented them?) I've suggested that they should all come more often if they like to see real football being played!. The general view was that there was a massive gulf between Newport's best and our reasonably good (such praise is praise, indeed!). During the match, we thought that JW created a lot of space and he certainly caused hesitatncy among the Newport back line for both Matty and Lanre to exploit - my abiding memory is the almost arrogant pass from the outside of Paddy's left peg to send Ash Chambers away down the right (or our left - althought the post match celebrations have still left me confused on this!) for the second goal; it really was like watching Brazil. Agree with Duffy, HoBC and others, we can't have another first 25 minutes like that against the racists. Down with sister in Balham again this weekend for some pre-match libationss. COYR

congratulations to every single staff member and supporter who was there, a fantastic day - and come on, nobody remembers the performance of the cup final winners! silverware is ours and we've done the city proud!
now comes the big one, and as the game approaches, neither team can be seperated by bookies or pundits alike. almost identical records, this is too close to call.
will we continue to have the wood over them, or is this finally their time - who knows. but lets get some tickets sold and give them the same level of support once more. then fingers crossed, it's bradford, rotherham, accy stanley and rochdale for us next year!

As it will be on TV you should be able to pick up a live feed online and watch the game.

Duplicated ....Sorry !

City played the second half like city play. Superb !.....God Bless you Millsy.
But... Beware (this is my Duffy moment) If we play like we played in the first half at the big one, the games over at half time.
They know only too well what we can do in the second half, let's surprise them! ....and do it from the start.
Secondly, I keep hearing that both teams are perfectly matched
......... OH NO they aren't, cast your minds back to the Oxford game.
I know,we're in difficult times, and visiting Wembley twice in a week is unprecedented.
But,...... CITY NEED YOU !
To end on a high, may I take this opportunity to salute all those Newport fans who came to applaud us back down Wembley way after the game. ....BRILLIANT

I agree 110% with everything you have said here Duffy. I actually think your posts make a lot of sense. I thought we bottled it in the 1st half as said by Duffy and then 2nd half we seemed to find our spark and 2 great goals got us our first ever cup trophy. Hoping for more of the same vs Luton but we will really have to be at our best like when we beat them 3-0 at home earlier in the season!
