Matty Blair sends York City into Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final
4:42pm Monday 7th May 2012 in News
GOAL hero Matty Blair struck in extra time to send York City to Wembley in the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final.
The Minstermen's semi-final against Mansfield Town appeared to be heading for penalties at 1-1 on aggregate when Blair bagged the winning goal with nine minutes remaining.
A minute later the Stags had defender Ritchie Sutton sent off for a second bookable offence and City managed to hang on.
York now face a Wembley double header, taking on Newport County in the final of the FA Trophy this Saturday before facing Luton Town or Wrexham in the play-off final on Sunday, May 20.

Wembley, like buses hey? Had to sit on a five bar gate down my country lane after Matty scored waiting for a txt from my mate Darbo. Sheep bolted when result came through (not like that - not from Newport!).

I live near Mansfield and I will be wearing my City shirt to really rub it in!!
City were much fitter that Mansfield last week and we were again today against a set of carthorses
Thank you to the board for their support - decent people running a decent club with dignity.
Come on City!

Blair supplied by Walker are the heroes of the hour with Walker playing the villain also with two sitters(missed) and a elegant leap by their keeper as Walker came in to challenge. Great drama & again we started brightly so well done City a great result so much better than penalty lotto. Like many others i wish the FA would treat the conference as the 5th national league so that much needed payment for youth teams etc. is maintained & its not such a financial disaster for relegated clubs. That way league clubs might accept more promotions from this competitive league.
Cmon City !!!!!

Fantastic - we were below our best but still much better than a team that are almost harder to watch than they are to beat. Footballing justice was done. Can't wait to see us become Luton's all-time bogey team on the 19th - we can do it and they know it.

Well done York City on this result, I just hope that you are better against Luton. I left the pub and the TV pictures at half time because the game was absolutely awful, schoolboy rubbish, balls up in the air collecting ice, passes to anybody but a York player, and no tackling ability at all. Is this what the York supporter has to look forward to, it was dire, and dismal, the Knavesmire produces better games.

Our determination to win was there to see. The playing surface was NOT condusive to our game of playing football and keeping it on the deck. I know because unlike you, I was there.

The point is that we won and we won for a reason. Don't write off a season of good work because Mansfield like to play football in a field (the clue's in the name - Field Mill). Sometimes in life you just have to win ugly. Many televised games have been won in a similar vein.

Booking fee £3 ticket and £2.25 postage. I guess with only 10 days to sell them then this is only real option.

I thought we went off the boil second half but in extra time we controlled it and won through with a suberb cross from Jason and finish form Matty.
Jason had a mare with the two sitter - just hammer the thing into the net lad!!
Well done all the lads and management. It was bound to be Luton so lets bring them on!

Luton will be a fierce test and hopefully the occassion wont get the better of the players this time especially with having a warm up match the week before. Lets hope we can do it this time because its a long journey back to York having lost never mind Abu Dhabi!

We have a better chance of beating Newport with the best team avialable, if we lose against Newport and then lose against Luton with a stronger team everyone will be saying we should have played the best team against Newport as well.
Lets put out a GOOD team in the FA trophy and our best team out in the play off final. That is the one to win so why risk injury's to our best. All the player's will be there next sun to have a pre-match kick around and experience wembley, so they will know what it's like for the following week. We should not need our strongest team to win next week and if we get beat it's not the end of the world. The league is where we want to be, not a lot of good winning the FA trophy but still in the blue square next season. Let some of the fringe player's, have a run out, you never know, they could have a stormer and force there way into the next game.

Unlike us fans - Wembley will still be something unique for most of the squad. Get the nervous fatigue and risk of cramp out of the way in the first match. By all means give the fringe players a run out in the final quarter but let's get a positive vibe associated with the place.
The play-off final will start with the potential for tension like none of us have experienced. Gary will deal with that but I don't think the awe of playing for the first time under The Arch should be added to the equation if it can be avoided.
