Ingham: York City ready for war at Mansfield

York City goalkeeper Michael Ingham makes his return against Mansfield York City goalkeeper Michael Ingham makes his return against Mansfield

MICHAEL INGHAM is expecting to go to “war” when York City travel to Mansfield Town for the vital play-off semi-final second leg on Monday.

The Minstermen goalkeeper is expecting a hostile atmosphere at Field Mill and more physical attention, along with the long-ball and long-throw bombardment which marked Wednesday’s first-leg 1-1 draw at Bootham Crescent.

Ingham, who played following a pain-killing injection on the ankle injury which has caused him to miss the last three games of the Blue Square Bet Premier regular season, said he had been booted in the chest, had coins thrown at him and received an elbow from Stags’ striker Matt Green, later sent off for two yellow cards, in a tempestuous encounter.

But as City look to book a second trip to Wembley at Mansfield, the 31-year-old, who also received considerable abuse on Twitter from some away supporters in the aftermath of the first leg, has backed his team-mates to get the job done.

“There have been tests of character and questions asked of the lads all season,” Ingham said. “To be fair, the lads have answered every single one of them. I have no worries at all about going to Mansfield.

“It is going to be loud, it is going to be very intimidating, it’s probably going to be another war. But the lads will roll their sleeves up and, hopefully, we will get a victory and roll on to Wembley.”

He added: “It was a tough game and a bit of a war out there at times.

“I have gone from getting a boot in the chest, to getting coins thrown at me, to getting an elbow off Matt Green which the linesman did not see.

“We were being bombarded by long throws and crosses into the box, but we have probably played the better stuff and are unlucky not to come away with a victory.”

Ingham stressed the need to deal with the long-throw threat of Exodus Geohaghon, whose flat bullet in the first half led to Ross Dyer’s 26th-minute goal for Mansfield, but reckons the Minstermen will handle the problem better in the return leg.

“We just didn’t deal with the one they scored from – the rest we did,” he said.

“There were no excuses and we probably will have to watch where we kick the ball out on Monday because he seems to take them from everywhere.

“He’s a bit like Rory Delap. He’s got the flat one and the loopy one. We will hopefully deal with that a bit better on Monday.”

On the situation with his injury, Ingham continued: “It was manageable, but it is very sore.

“I had to take a pain-killing jab 20 minutes before kick-off and a lot of drugs. But I got through it.

“It’s a lot of severe bone bruising so I will just have to manage it until the end of the season and rest it over the summer.

“In our minds, we have got another three games to go.

“We go to Mansfield on Monday and we want to play in the play-off final and get promoted.

“That was the aim from July 1 as the gaffer keeps saying and the players are the same.

“The Lutons and the Grimsbys and the Braintrees and the Cambridges – we have always answered the questions and we have probably played better football away from home.

“We go to Mansfield on Monday and don’t fear anybody.”

City will be buoyed at Mansfield by more than 1,500 travelling supporters after the Club yesterday sold out their allocation for the all-ticket match (kick off 2pm).

Strong words MI. Hope they don't come back to haunt us.
Fully expecting another very close game on Monday with Mansfield using their strenths to the max. Hopefully we can hold our nerve but most importantly the game is remembered for the right reasons - the football- not some off field antics such as we witnessed last Wednesday (thanks to a drunken Ms Still) and at Luton 2 years ago. :)

The twittered abuse of Michael Ingham started well before Wednesday's game, with him being harangued because City hadn't made enough tickets available for Mansfield fans.

Ingy did point out it had nothing to do with him, but to no avail.

Luella probably feels right at home at Field Mill.

Its not Field Mill now.

They've renamed it 'The Call Girl Account Stadium' or something like that!

Couldn't get to the game so I was watching on the telly and Challinor was very clearly pushed off balance, it wasn't a dive but it wasn't enough for a penalty, the reaction from the Mansfield team and fans was ridiculous, he'd hardly hit the ground before you they were going nuts. He didn't appeal and was getting straight up, complete over-reaction!!

Dont disagree with 'facts' we are a more physical side but we do play decent football as well. As regards Matt Green you are wrong to suggest he is a thug, one of the fairest/decent players around. Went for the 50/50 ball like any good striker, your keeper was out of the box and went down like a jap sniper had hit him from the York bell tower. Yet jumped up as fine as anything once the booking was delivered. Anyway I am not on here to wind anyone up but I have to say that Michael Ingham certainly contributed to the abuse he received. His behaviour as he left the field at half time could have incited a riot and he was reported to the police who clearly stated his actions were a public disorder offence and they wanted to speak with him. This all surprised me because I have always had a lot of respect for him as he always applauds the away fans after a game. Can I just add that the coin was thrown by an idiot who no-one had ever seen at a game before and should be banned for life, we were appalled. Really looking forward to Monday, we have almost sold out (only 100 tickets left this morning) so should be a cracking atmosphere. Have a safe journey and whoever wins lets hope they stuff Luton at Wembley.

Back to the football I thought we started brightly, much better than in a number of our recent home games. The Ref was at times lenient allowing some physical aspects of the game to the overall benefit of Mansfield, not that Smiths challenge was not reckless but overall we could have finished with 10 & them one or more fewer. Did not see any of the CEO antics just hope she behaves at home.
Both sides really want this I just hope that good football prevails & our players passing, skill & fitness should edge on the day. Shame we cannot be allowed the full capacity in the away end as we could have filled it. Looking very much like Luton in the final which is a shame as they have been on off this season & who needs the aggro though Wembley will certainly benefit with their numbers whoever they play, but it would make me a very happy clapper indeed to gain promotion after our recent history with them.
Cmon City!!!

I'm sure you're probably right on Green but we'll agree to disagree on Michael Ingham. He applauded the stags fans at the half time whistle for the banter as usual. The video shows he took the hit from Matt.

First half of this post is laughable... but you redeem yourself towards the end.

Ingham headed the ball, Green put his studs in his stomach. This is a good few feet away from the ball, and it was after Ingham had headed it so late and dangerous. It wasn't as if Green had had an age to weigh it up either... oh no, wait a moment.

Given Ingham had been pelted by objects and abused by your support, is it any wonder he did something other than applaud you for his time in front of you?

Monday could prove to be a classic or it'll be a nervous game with few chances. Either way, it'll be a good atmosphere. Luton's win is ominous as they have moved up a gear recently.

It should be a cracking game on Monday, let's hope it's played in the right spirit and that it's a triumph for football.

My hope is that gary Mills will set up the team to beat Mansfield 7-0. All out attack. That way we'll probably win 2-0. At the start of the season he spoke about not worrying who the opposition was and letting them worry about us. He learned that from Cloughie as we all know. It's the guaranteed way to ensure we win two Wembley finals! Mansfield are the Stoke City of the Conference - a bunch of cloggers with a party trick. Please don't set up the team to defend against them. Let them have their throw-in goal, and go and stick a bagful in the other end.

It is a contact sport and what happened on Wednesday night was not much different to how Scott Brown tried to split the FGR player Michael Uwezu in two on the Saturday. I didn't hear any one in the main stand critisising Browny, but I would think they were all hoping he stayed on the pitch.

I am sure our lads are quite capable of handling themselves on Monday and dishing out just as much as Mansfield give.

You're right, but equally I thought Brown should have been sent off agaist FGR too (glad he was not!) - I'm all for a spirited performance, but dangerous tackles are rightly punished harshly. And Mansfield seem to have the worst record for conceding fouls in the whole division, so it may be that they're a little too physical even for a 'contact sport'. Absolutely agree with your last sentence though - I'm sure our lads are ready for a physical contest!

LOL, memories of old north stand at Field Mill. I do miss terracing, Boothams a proper football ground not like these plastic meccano sets. Back to the match, now watched the video and agree Green first yellow. Second yellow he did not touch the ball but was stupid to put hand up. I still believe Fyfield should have walked. Ref was typical joke in this league, absolutely no consistency. We cannot appeal Green's second yellow but ref can rescind if he believes he was wrong - absolutely no chance and Green will miss game. Riley very doubtful - big loss, but this season we have strength in depth and rested most of these players and still beat Wrexham and Kiddy away last match. First leg we played ugly for the draw but believe me we are far more than the 'hoof' you witnessed. Monday will be cracking game as we have been unbeaten at home for so long and York have good away record. York very good passing side but didnt really penetrate. At Field Mill we play some good football but my fear is the pace and counter attack from York. Green out gives you new problems though! Wish you could have full allocation of away end but this is not the club decision but stupid Notts safety group (jobsworths). I'm sure we could have sold full capacity (9,900). Safe journey and good luck for your only (hopefully) trip to Wembley.
