York City 1 Mansfield 1 - Blue Square Bet Premier semi-final first leg

City’s James Meredith stretches every sinew to fend off a Mansfield raid City’s James Meredith stretches every sinew to fend off a Mansfield raid

YORK City and Mansfield Town are locked together at 1-1 following the first leg of the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off semi-final at Bootham Crescent tonight.

Ross Dyer gave the Stags the lead midway through the first-half, before City levelled thanks to an own-goal from Exodus Geohaghon shortly before half-time.

But Mansfield will be without top scorer Matt Green for Monday’s pivotal second leg after he was sent off for a second yellow card on 74 minutes.

Chris Doig fired over the bar from a City corner early on and Matty Blair had the ball in the net on 20 minutes but the linesman had already raised his flag with Chris Smith judged to have been offside in the initial challenge with Mansfield ‘keeper Andy Marriott.

The Stags had threatened through the long throws of Geohaghon and he used his skill to devastating effect when Mansfield took the lead on 26 minutes.

His bullet into the six-yard area found Dyer, whose flick header nestled in Michael Ingham’s bottom right corner.

But City responded well and were deservedly level on 42 minutes. Jon Challinor’s delightful cross into the area left Geohaghon bewildered, and he stuck the ball into his own net.

After the break, Ingham was forced to parry away Anthony Howell’s shot on 52 minutes and then Green was sent off following a skirmish close to the Minstermen box.

Challinor came closest to giving York the victory, firing narrowly wide from 25 yards as City looked for a winner, and Chambers headed over from a Challinor cross with two minutes remaining.

But it remains all to play for at Field Mill.

My 1st ever football match and i thoroughly enjoyed it. Mansfield were dirty throughout the match. C'omon York take them down on Monday.

I would prefer to call them a physical side rather than a dirty side. But we knew what to expect, after all it is our third meeting with them. We played well enough to deserve a draw. Just a bit concerned watching some of the players struggling in unacustomed positions. Parslow did very well but I thought that Meredith lost the pace of the game in mid-field. Both full backs Challinor and Fyefield got better as the game went on, after they both looked vulnerable early on. We need to defend well and take our chances up front on Monday. But please dont let it go to penalties, I wouldnt back us with the wifes money.

York played well against a side who were more 'physical' than skillful, and having Green sent off will hopefully give us a very slight advantage in the second leg. Realistically though, having a striker sent off barely affected their game, as their entire attacking threat was from the freak with the long throw rather than their forwards.

I'm quite confident we can beat them at Field Mill (although based on previous results, I wouldn't be surprised with a draw leading to penalties...) if we can keep the ball down and play to feet.

One of the most encouraging aspects of this game was the way City adapted to Mansfield's game - we got stung by a long throw, therefore we stopped giving away throws in our own half. I would love to see the stats, but I can't recall seeing Mansfield having a single throw anywhere near our area after their goal.

The areas for improvement in my opinion are clearing our lines (as there was a heart-stopping mix up in our own box at the start of the second half), and the 'final ball' in to the strikers - in short, we need to be more confident and more incisive.

Finally, I absolutely agree with Parslow being named MOTM. His work rate and versatility have made him a key player at York City, and he will hopefully stay here for many more seasons.

Physical or dirty, why do teams insist on these tactics, can't they play football properly. Matt Green deserved his sending off, every time he jumped in the air he lead with his elbow. That Briscoe lad who came on was a big unit, no wonder he put a Kiddeminster lad in hospital, i noticed he was starting to brage in once he came on.
Anyway good result, Parslow, Doig, Smith and Challinor all put a good shift in tonight.
Keep our heads on monday, be patient, ignore the thuggery, I think we will win.

A win at home would have been great, but its only half time and our away record is so good that we should (but won't be) favourite's to go through now. If we have a ref with a lot of bottle to stamp out their physical (dirty) play on the day we will beat them and progress to wembley (for the 2nd time this season) and then onto the promised land of league 2.

Half time and still all to play for, Mansfield kept it tight at the back and kept our front three quiet. Second leg they will come forward more which will suit us. Didn't see much tonight from Mansfield to be frightened about, we just need to be able to defend the long throw. Thought Danny P had a great game and deserved man of the match. Green being sent off was a bonus. Should be an interesting second leg. Keep the faith. Wembley twice.

Cany agree with Parslow being mom. Yes im happy with a draw and thought we played ok but a couple of points. 1, We played 7 defensive players at home with 3 playing out of position. 2 defenders in midfield did help break up their play but offered us nothing as an attacking threat. Parslows lack of know how in that position meant he was unable to create space plus his passing was always square or backwards. Meredith worked his socks off but again offers little in the creativity department. I think if we had played midfielders in the midfield postions then we could have edged this game.
Smith or Paddy mom for me. Also chambers appears to be returning back to the form he showed at the start of the season. Blairs pace causes all sorts of problems but the final ball has to improve.
Yes im knit picking but all I want is promotion as ive suffered a lot of years if being let down. Bring on monday.

Both teams can play better - we'll go through if we play to our potential. As a final thought why don't we stand in front of Exodus to force more height on his throws?

I thought we were outstanding tonight against a team of thugs. Mansfield just hoofed the ball and relied on the long throw. We battled and I thought so many players were outstanding particularly Parslow, Smith and Doig. Perhaps could have taken Jamal off and dropped Mezza to left back to get Moke on earlier.

I think we might sneak it with our fast counter attacking game, particularly if we can get an early goal. Just have avoid conceding goals and match them physically which we did tonight.

Green should have had a straight red for his challenge on Inghy. Well done lads!

Lots of possession but no end product. Walker had a shocker. Meredith yet again played out of position and Chambers was the invisible man. Blair off form and Fyfield wasn't up to much. It says a lot if Parslow is the man of the match (deserved but it shows the lack of quality elsewhere on the pitch).

I'm looking forward to Wembley next weekend but on tonight's showing I'm not convinced we'll be there the week after!

Its called pressure and it doesn't matter how we score - it was a great searching cross which, ultimately, got its reward.

They should have had one of theirs sent off (at least booked) for an off the ball trip directly in front of the ref in the first half. The ref was poor, as was his (joke) linesman on the Main Stand side. Fyfield's play with his feet was good but there were a few times when he seemed to coast back as they were attacking. As my dad used to say - Mansfield are just a muck or nettles side who will (dis)grace the league.

after the game they are saying he pulled his hand away, which he did at the very last second, the ref can't see that, however I thought the ref only gave that free-kick because we all appealed behind the goal!
also, how Fyfield didn't get sent off is beyond me completely, I thought he struggled at times, but improved.

In the words of Arsene Wenger " I did not see it" but am not surprised. They were an ugly bunch last night, especially their captain. Always at the referee on any decision. I fear for their WAGs (if they have any) - they'll probably get a right beating after that. For the first half an hour I was trying to work out why Reginald D Hunter was playing centre half for Mansfield.

As for the ball boy in front of the Family Stand - he only picked up the ball once. Maybe they were on notice not to touch the ball after Saturday's game. There again, given their propensity for long throws - i'd have told them to pick the ball up at the earliest opportunity to give away a drop ball rather than that lump get hold of it.

I hardly think a one off game justifies building a stadium with a capacity of 10,000. Its hard enough to get the council to build a stadium at all never mind one that will not be fully utilised.

Listened to the game, couldnt get tv coverage in the UAE, so cannot comment on the display based on Barry's commentary. Possession, good passing game by City, against physical, bullying tactics by our opponents, esp. at set-pieces when we must try more to be first to the ball! Our problem last-night and one that has been with us for sometime now, is the final pass and the failure to penetrate defences and take our chances when they come along.eg. Jason Walker should have buried the chance he had just before half-time and after we had equalised and that would have really had us in the driving-seat. If we can repair this by Monday, then, we can beat this Mansfield side and get the second visit to Wembley. We were the better footballing side and the match stats confirms our overall superiority(61% possession - 12 corners to one) but we must show more invention and cunning in and around their 18 yard box. Agree with one of the above posts about the Rory Delap type throws - have someone right in front of him - jumping up and down, distracting him! The referee was very average and missed a lot of their physical gamesmanship/fouling and lets just hope we have a much stronger set of officials for Monday afternoon to nip this. Thought Parslow played well but my MotM was Chris Smith, who gets better and better in his captaincy and Back Four roles. COYR - Wembley by 4pm Monday afternoon!!

Just after we scored, their defence was at 6's and 7's and that was the point when I though we had our best opportunity - but it wasn't to be. I agree about the stadium. It is all very well wanting 10k seats/standing but our average is just over 3k. If it ever gets built, as long as there is the facility to expand, I am happy with 6k for now. Look at Darlington less than 2k in a 20k stadium. Better to have a full ground with atmosphere.

Of course I was at the game (I've been to most of them) and I really enjoyed it. Shame more fans can't be bothered to turn up for more games during the season, but not complaining as anybody paying to watch York is good for the club.

I personally feel that we've missed an opportunity to take a lead back to their place and that Mills could have picked a more effective team (Meredith at left back with Moke in front / we all know that Reed is an impact sub so he could have made a difference late on etc...).

Fortunately our away form is excellent so it might just stand us in good stead.

I'd possible swap Fyfield with Mez, thus keeping the height in the team and Fyfield should be able to run all day in midfield.

Kicked off when a TV presenter questioned her about Mansfield fans being so poor, and I think she'd had a couple.

Thought the game was fairly even with York trying to play football and Mansfield resorting to a hoof and mutant throw each time they came forward. They really should borrow the old air raid siren that Lincoln used to employ when they played the same tactics under Alexander.

Thought the foul on Ingham was worthy of a straight red (late and studs to the chest) and there is no way the second yellow will be recinded. Big bonus for York having Green out. Fyfield should have walked too but I'm not so upset that he didn't.

All in all, a draw is not a bad result and given Mansfield have nothing but a long ball and brutal appraoch to tackling we now know we have nothing to fear from them.

Monday will be a very interesting fixture but I have seen enough now of both teams to be confident it is there for City to win.

Hasn't Gibson served his 4 match suspension? He would be a better bet than Fyfield at left back and his extra strength and height is what we need against the aerial onslaught of Mansfield. Whilst Meredith isn't the most refined midfielder, his defensive qualities far outweigh Moke's. I don't think you can play both Moke and McLaughlin together in midfield, they both play higher up the pitch and aren't as combatitive as Mez. Banjo will also come into the mix, GM will include him somewhere.

Would agree with this. Moke and Reed can really change games in the final 20 mins and if the game is stretched, they'd be good to bring on.

Doig was hobbling but maybe more to being out for a little while than an injury I hope.

Only 21 tickets available for the away leg at Field Mill.

Let's hope that Mansfield release the last 400 for the North Stand as I have read reports that it has a capacity of 1,900.

Square balls, if you will excuse the expression, and often did not see better opportunities; having said that he did play well, but in my view Smith MOM by a mile !

Apparently she spent an awful long time in the boardroom toilets "powdering" her nose.

it is all about ambition. Bootham Crescent in the past has held well over 10,000. If the seats were removed it still probably would. You can design and build a stadium that will give plenty of atmosphere whether there be 3,000 or 10,000 in it.
How many times in the last 30 years has BC held well over 10k?

I've probably been to most of them and there haven't been many. We got just short of 11k for the Wigan game in 1985 which was more than the 4th round defeat of Arsenal - and that was only because of that stupid idea to issue vouchers for the Liverpool game. Never seen so many scousers at a York match. I would agree that 8k would be a reasonable compromise but I would still rather see a 3/4 full stadium than a 1/4 full
You have got to remember the games against Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City et al all in the same ground as is played in now. So you would have to say that the ground was only half full yesterday. It is the seating that limits the capacity.
The real difference is the infilling of the enclosure and (possibly) the regrading of the Longhurst stand. The crowd last night (even with 1350 away fans) was short of capacity. It is shame that they have to waste so much of the Pop Stand. The seating in the Pop stand has been there since the mid 70's.

Just like the whole setup at Mansfield - rough as. Goes with the territory.

how is it that we keep upsetting other supporters/clubs?! do they under-estimate us or something?
we've now had problems with grays, crawley, luton both down there and last season's home league game....and now mansfield's chief exec! have we got a little wind-up merchant somewhere just chipping away at these teams?! what a disgraceful way to conduct yourself, shame she wasn't locked in a cell for the night to sober up.

One too many fizzy sherberts is the general consenus... or maybe it dawned on her that the hoof tactic employed by her team is horrific to watch compared to good passing football...?

I imagine she will be keeping a very low profile for the rest of the season.

Unlucky not to score but Millsy
should have brought on Moke and Reedy with 25 mins to go.
The MAGICIAN and the BULLDOSER would have frightened them to death!

Interesting that Mansfailed fans were moaning a bucketful about not getting enough tickets - in the end they sold well short of their allocation.

Meanwhile we've sold out of ours four days ahead of the game.

Plenty of time left for anyone who's missed out to nip through to Mansfield and get seats elsewhere in the ground.

Have I missed something about Moke? Because I can't understand why he was brought on instead of Potts/Reed last night.
Potts can play the through ball we were missing and isn't afraid to get stuck in and Reed is an impact goalscorer who can stand his ground. Seems like a nice fella with his heart in the right place but I just don't think all the praise for him is justified.
Someone help me if I'm blind to the truth!
Walker will score on Monday, football will win.

Shocking conduct by the Mansfield Chief Exec. Rating her behaviour out of 10, I would most certainly have to give her 1.

Before the match she was strutting around the Burton Lane WMC with her millionaire boyfriend, as though she owned the place. All the Mansfield fans were singing their praise, and they were lapping it up.

At last someone talking sense, Moke's more of a winger, tricky dribbler with pace but at times forgets to pass. Pottsy out and out Midfielder good passing game, goes forward more than sideways, not scared to put a foot in or have a go at goal and has 90mins plus in his engine. Both Potts and Reedy should have got 5 - 10mins last night and we should have gone all out for that 2nd goal. Fyfield was very lucky to stay on last night and I thought GM should have subbed him straight after that late challenge. GM picked a team and formation last night that would finish the first leg either level or ahead but did not want to have to go to Field Mill needing to score to get back on level terms, job done. He thinks we'll edge the 2nd leg 1-0 or 2-1, I hope he's right. I thought we should have taken the upper hand last night and gone into Monday's game knowing a clean sheet or a draw and we're through.
