Ashley Chambers seals draw with crisis-hit Darlington

STRIKER Ashley Chambers has been challenged to reproduce the form that saw him rescue a point for York City at troubled Darlington.

Chambers, who has failed to start any of City’s last five matches, was hailed off the bench by manager Gary Mills with the visitors trailing 2-0 54 minutes into Saturday’s Blue Square Bet Premier clash.

The former Leicester striker went on to claim an assist and a goal within six minutes of his introduction, delivering the corner that saw Chris Smith reduce the deficit before finding the net for a ninth time this season.

City chief Mills said: “Ash did what we want him to do more often when he got us the equaliser. He gives you pace and he was lively when he came on.”

Skipper Smith’s efforts were also lauded again by Mills, who believes the 30-year-old centre-back is now meeting the standards he set last season after a less impressive campaign this term.

The Minstermen boss added: “My skipper was fantastic again. He got us another goal to put them on the back foot and his leadership over the last couple of games has been excellent.

“He’s been annoyed with himself this season, as have the other centre-halves. They haven’t been the players they can be, but you don’t just throw good players away.

“Anybody who has watched Smudger over the last two games will have seen what he’s about. We had that week in, week out last season and I hope we will get it until the end of the season now.”

Mills was left lamenting the goals his team conceded, however, with the first from a poorly-defended short corner and the second after recalled midfielder Andre Boucaud lost possession in the visitors’ half.

He went on to pay tribute to his team’s character, though, after they fought back for a point, saying: “The first goal came from a short corner that we were slow getting out to.

“You should be sending two players out for a short corner, but we didn’t even get one out there. The cross then went into our box and the ball was in the back of the net.

“That summed us up in the first half and we deserved to be a goal down at the break. Then, it’s a long way back when you concede another poor goal early in the second half.

“We were poor and they were better than us up to that point, but then we played how we can with more urgency and got the two goals back. It was a funny game but we showed character to get another massively valuable point and that was pleasing.

“In the end, we could have won because we had a couple cleared off the line and their ’keeper made a good save so we can take a lot from that because we remain fourth, in the play-off positions and are looking forward to a last 16 tie in the Trophy.”

Darlington had not won a single point in 2012 prior to Saturday’s game and, despite Mills insisting he fully expected a tough match against the crisis club close to extinction and with six teenagers on duty, he also pointed out that he would have felt a little cheated by the team’s past performances if he had been in the opposition dugout.

He said: “I’d be a bit annoyed if I was the Darlington manager because, if they could show the same level of commitment as they did against us every week, then they would be sitting where we are in the table.”

Mills gave Matthew Blinkhorn his full debut with Jamie Reed dropping to the bench and, after replacing the former Sligo Rovers forward on 73 minutes, said: “He hasn’t played an abundance of football and tired a bit. He was struggling to hold the ball up, but that will come with him.”

Oh well that's us sticking with the centre halves we have then.

Your negativity really grinds on me, we have Mcgurk in our squad, one of the best defenders in the league. The performance he gave in the play off semi final against Luton was one of the best individual performances I'v seen from a York player. Parslow and Smith are also good players, once these daft errors get ironed out we will have a very strong defence. We've conceded the same number of goals as Fleetwood, only about 4 teams have conceded less. Is it really that bad?

Entertainment value for Saturday's game was very good, esp. in the second-half and the atmosphere(even in such a large, mainly empty stadium) was great. City's inclination to "come-alive" in the second-half was again evident and we must try and grip games much earlier and put away our chances and not be doing the chasing. Darlo played some good football and with a lot of spirit and pride BUT as a team eyeing the Play-offs and promotion, we should really be looking to pick-up three points from such fixtures and our wake-up call didn't start until Chambers and Reed came on after 55 minutes and we were 2-0 down. GM has got to shake them out of this and get the whole of the team to be more positive and aggressive and get in some starts like we did against Luton, Braintree and Wrexham. At set-pieces, the defenders sometimes look a bit unsure of where to position themselves and they don't appear to be quick enough at being first to the ball and this needs working on during training and maybe stronger communication/concen
tration is needed. If GM is happy with our current defensive players, then we have to trust him on this but at least review some of the defensive tactics and eradicate situations like the "switching-off" from the short corner for Darlo's first and the poor back-tracking and challenging that saw one of their youth team players turn our defence inside-out, for the second!! Overall, we need a fit again, in-form Jason Walker back leading the attack as quickly as possible and a return to wide attacking players to link-up with him and start stretching and worrying opposition defenders!

I don't wish to fall out with Duffy as the beauty of these forums is we are all entitled to an opinion but I could not agree with you more. I have constantly been saying that our defensive record is nowhere near being poor - of course it could be better but we don't live in a perfect world.I dread to think what comments will flow if we really hit a bad patch!!

Danny Parslow is a good clubman and good cover for a few positions, but I have to agree Dave McGurk is the better player and his partnership with Chris Smith last season was solid. I don't think they have been given much chance this season, as a pair, due to injuries, suspensions and Smith's loss of form, but now Smith is playing well get them together again. Fyfield is the better distributor but at this time it's the more conventional defensive skills that are called for. No room for anything less than the best team available when you are playing the likes of Grimsby.

Ok I'm going to give you an example from our very last game against Darlo. Their first goal, they get a corner and take it short with not one York player picking it up, it comes into the box and it's one nil. I guarantee that if we had a real leader at the back commanding the defence that would never have happened. Look I'm not trying to fall out with anyone myself but just quoting figures hides the fact that we are conceading goals and losing points we should not be losing through a lack of basic organisation.

Some of your comments are pretty accurate Duffy.
Darlington's first goal was due to the York defence messing around in the 6 yard box. Seeing a short corner coming isn't rocket science.
Did York really think all they had to do was turn up and score 5 or 6 goals?
I got the feeling the whole squad was completely unprepared for this match which was a big event as far as everyone connected with Darlington was concerned.

City had fantastic away support at Darlington, and lets be honest the majority of us expected to see City win. But we made such a poor start to the game, that the longer the game went on the more confident Darlington became. Their first goal was sheer amateur marking by our defence, an unmarked player allowed room to score. I was right behind the goal and Ingham was screaming out for someone to pick him up as he ran towards the six yard box. The second goal was also very amateurish defending, Beacaud played a lazy ball towards Blair, but he reacted very slowly and allowed the young defender to nip in and steal it from him. Worst of all the young kid was then allowed to run freely and unchallenged almost the length of the pitch, before sliding the ball through to the lad who scored. Although I agree that a commanding centre back would be a valueable addition, one player alone wont solve the problem of lazy teamwork. The whole squad needs to up their game before we drop any more silly points and the play-off dream is gone forever. Grimsby and Mansfield have the play-off places within their reach now, so its time for everyone to stand up and be counted.

After overcoming my disappointment from Saturday I feel realistically that we are in with a good shout of those last two play off positions. Some of our rivals have a few of their tougher games coming up & our good squad has enough quality to do the required work.
Walker needs to be back & sharp soon though as we always seem to have a couple of goals in us, but giver our generosity conceding poor goals we need the ability to get that third.
This will be a tight run in & Gm must iron out the malaise in mid field Boucaud was as poor as I have seen him & Blair seemed to lack the sparkle of late when you could rely on him being a couple of yards faster than the opposition.
Pleasant Trophy distraction then that telling Grimsby game hope GM really gees the lads up for that one.

Well I just about sh*te myself when the oppo attack us and I include Sollihull Moors. I have no confidence at all in our ability to repel an attack or keep a clean sheet before we even kick off for the start of the game.

I believe some of our defending issue's are down to our more adventerous style of play which does not afford the cover for the back four that they had under the previous manager.

Saying that we have looked vulnerable for yrs at the back to dead ball situations. That seems to have got worse.

Have you actually seen this guy play? Or is it merely the fact he is so tall and being released by Aldershot.......? His CV looks flakey and the words "lumbering" and "slow" perhaps spring to mind?
