York City held by crisis club Darlington

York City came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Blue Square Bet Premier crisis club Darlington.

The Minstermen fell behind on 42 minutes when Adam Rundle scored for the hosts at the Darlington Arena.

John McReady put the Quakers 2-0 up four minutes into the second half.

However, substitute Ashley Chambers teed up York skipper Chris Smith on the hour and then scored the equaliser a minute later.

The point keeps City in fourth place in the table.

After the cricket this morning I saw the 2-0 coming. Good effort to get back and should have won so cannot complain about the attitude. Hope it doesn't happen but if they do go belly-up I guess this will look a better result - as will the earlier draw.

We`re making life difficult for ourselves.Don`t know whether the size of crowd got to our players but we weren`t at the races in the first half.
Credit them for fighting back but disappointing against a makeshift side.
Fortunately some results went in our favour but watch out for Grimsby. We`re in a real dogfight now.

Honestly we are risking out on a top five place to someone like Grimsby. Dire first half and again silly goals conceaded to a bloody awfull team. We finaly started to play after going two down yet again.

Two points. In gods name why put Fyfield out on the wing where he made a mess of everything.
And mr Mills it was NOT a massive point gained.

Just got back from Darlington. We never broke sweat until we were 0-2 behind. Then we started to play at last, and at 2-2 we were the favourites to win it. But then we seemed to ease off and allow Darlington to come back into the game, when we really should have killed them off. I have to admit that bringing Fyefield on didnt really help. He looked a lot like what he actually is, a defender playing on the wing. Credit has to go to the young lad in goal for Darlington, he really earned his money today (if they are actually paying him). Fortunately a lot of the other results were kind to City today, but this display wont frighten any of our challengers. I would like to see the team show the same passion as the fans, the 1,300 + fans who went to Darlo today were great.

Just back from Darlo, we were simply awful in the first half today. No fight, no passion and no idea. I can't understand GM's tatics at times, I would love to know what he tells our wingers. None of them seem to be willing to beat the full back on the outside. Just when we were on top and looking like we were going to go on and win the match he takes off Blinkhorn and puts Fyfield on. Serious mistake that costs us 3 points today. Chambers had the beating of their full back.

Glad to be part of hopefully the salvation of Darlo FC & got into the ground ok.
We took a great crowd good atmosphere though Darlos small CHAV choir seemed resentful at times.
I had spent the morning watching my lads team playing with passion & desire going 2 down playing a competitive football game. However why was I watching our professionals play 30 minutes of exhibition football whilst pretty at times lacked penetration & passion. Yes we looked in our comfort zone the better team etc but were deservedly punished for complacency.
Thought we might come out having had a minor rocket & got down to winning the game but no banana time undone two down. At last we got to playing made the subs Reedy & Ashley for Pilks & Boucs much more direct passionate football ensued back on even terms.
Game lacked players running at the defence with the ball to feet & killer passes in between defenders for our swift front 3 to run on to. Smith had a really decent game Parslow too Blair struggled to make the sort of impact of recent games Kerr had the passion but was not playing in a position to release it, Mez & Challinor were very decent too. Boucs for me could have gone earlier too negative not taking the game to Darlo its all very well having good posession but you have to do something with it.
Gms brainwave of Fyfield on for Blinkhorn smacked of Parslow emergency striker, Blinkhorn was back to goal too often unable to turn his marker as Walker might so a sub was due the Game needed either Moke to dance his way into the box or Moses at a push to force away in partnering Reed.
Either way 2 points lost damage limited by results elsewhere but its looking like we are competing for last two play off places with these displays. Last visit to Darlo fed up of being trapped in that car park after paying £5 for the honour (most expensive in Conference).
Come on City we are a better team than today!!!!

How many clean sheets have we kept this season with smith in the team? I am sure not many. He is the weak link in the team. He was fantastic last season when he came in but this year despite full hearted displays he gets caught the wrong side of opposing players so many times. Good luck to darlo I hope it all works out for them.

York fans were a credit to their club today and more importantly football. Darlo fans everywhere are hugely grateful for all the support, the posters and collections. If that is the way you play when you are below par God help the rest of the division. Had some magic banter with some of your fans. If there was any chavvy taunts sorry. i didn't hear much c*ap. All I can say is that everybody around me was clapping the away end and quite rightly so. Good luck with promotion as you play some great stuff.

in some ways it was just like the Lincoln game, terrible first half, much improved 2nd.
however, this time we conceded 2 goals and they were both very poor. the first especially when nobody picked up the runner for the short corner.
great fightback though, and going 4-4-2 was the key to that. Smithy did well for the goal as he'd just had a header cleared over the bar that lead to the corner.
welcome back Ashley Chambers as well! where's he been for the last 2-3 months?! just like his old self and a calm, delightful finish.
all credit to Darlo as they aren't just a team that's going to get rolled over. their keeper made a top drawer save late on to deny Paddy.
Grimsby in 2 weeks is most definately the next important game, however, it might be good to get Walker some playing time v Ebbsfleet.

As others have said yet another game where we only play (and expect somehow to win) in one half - always the second half. What has happened to the pre-Christmas team? Walker is important but we are not a one man team. Well done to Chambers - I've been doubter but he had a point to prove today and did very well. Does anyone ANYONE agree with the decision to replace Blinkhorn with Fyfield when we had them for the taking? We know you're the boss Gary and your decisions have got us where we are but you're on your own on that one I think! Anyway having slumped from title contenders we haven't yet slumped out of play off contention. But Grimsby a massive game suddenly...

You have something like 3 days to sign a centre half that can actually organise our defence and save the season. If not I can see a defeat at Grimsby and us slipping out of the play offs.

If we can come out the other side of Grimsby (a) still in a play off spot, our remaining 14 fixtures read: Top Half Away (2); Top Half Home (4); Bottom Half Home (4); Bottom Half Away (4) .... cause for cautious optimism .... Whilst I try and refrain from critcising individuals on here, I really dont understand why Fyfield was brought on the left wing just as we were starting to lay into Darlo and they were there for the taking. Shame Moke wasnt on the bench as I reckon we might have won it because we were really starting to stretch them with the width.

The much maligned Chris Smith actually had a good game yesterday and if anything it was our lack of a threat going forward that was the downfall. Chambers really sparked things up but I too was baffled by Fyfield decision - maybe Blinkhorn had taken a knock? In truth I wonder if a lot of us got sucked into underestimating the strength of the Darlington team? It was apart from the keeper, Hatch and Chandler not far short of what has played all season - certainly not a team of youth players.Whipped up by the home support I thought they played very well and thus I guess Mills is saying to come back from 2 down makes for a valuable point. If you add back Darlington's 10 points deducted they would not be that far off the play offs which maybe puts things into perspective.Usual over reaction from some above - still only 1 defeat in c20? and yet talk of "having to save the season"!!

Last couple of seasons we had a very defensive minded mid field & relied on Brodie to score with Rankine providing muscle when required. Brodie went too late to replace & we struggled to score at all. If we went a goal down we were sunk so this squad & set up is a breath of fresh air fortunately with goals coming from many other players.
If we can get Jason back sharp & hungry with something like his best form we will do very nicely. Darlo were much better than anticipated maybe why our team did not get going their No 31 was a real play-maker but going two down is pretty inexcusable they were not a great threat. We always seem to have a couple of goals in us but squandered them to gain a point.
Not disagreeing much on back 4 but why no Challinor thought he was one of our better players consistently Smith much better yesterday but still prefer TY less negative passes than Smith & Ingy a happier bunny without Smith.
Cmon City!!!

Give Darlo some credit, they played with a lot of spirit and pride and they were not at all a bad side and their young keeper was outstanding and looks a great prospect. That said, City in the first-half were clueless and lacked any penetration around the danger areas and the defending on the short corner leading to Darlo's first goal was very poor and not much better with their breakaway second. Agree with Duffy, you really do have your heart in your mouth when pressure is placed on the City defence - they can play some neat passing movement/link-up play with the ball coming away from the box but they don't seem as assured when back tracking and marking/challenging opposition attackers, esp. from set-pieces. Chambers was the key when he came on, with his pace and trickery and which compensated for Blair who was slightly off the boil. A strengthening of the central defence,(either reviewing tactics, returning Dave McGurk or bringing in a suitable central defender) and a return of an in-form Jason Walker, are the key to us keeping in the Top Five and gaining the second promotion place. Overall, a great day out and in what was the biggest crowd in Leagues 1, 2 and BSBP!! Good-luck to Darlo in their bid for survival!

That's what we risk if we don't bring in someone to organise hence to save the season. We have gone from challenging for top spot to possibly dropping out of the play off spots after the next league game. These poor draws are killing us.

I think the flack aimed at Chris Smith is unfair, he was head and shoulders above any of our back four yesterday. If McGurk is brought back it will have to be as a replacement for Parslow. God knows what we signed Moses Ashikodi for, surely he is fit enough by now to at least make the bench. I was struggling to identify ten teenagers in Darlingtons squad yesterday, perhaps that was just a bit of gamesmanship, to lull City into thinking that they just had to turn up to win. If that was so, then it probably worked.

I too got stuck in the Car Park for ages and it would have been worth it had we won.I keep saying we have to stop drawing and start winning games. Some other results went for us yesterday but we can't rely on that every week-we sort our own destiny. Scoring is not a real problem and we have scorers all over the pitch.Defending is the problem and I'm now beginning to believe we need a commanding centre back to organise the defence(like Miller from Darlo who went to Grimsby).I really wanted to see McGurk on the field instead of the bench as he is clearly our best centre back.A disappointing result where a win should have been for the taking but we let 2 soft goals in. For a change I thought the ref did well-he wasn't looking to be the star attraction like some in this league.Come on City it's time to push on. I want some league football next season and while the FA trophy may be financially good for the club it doesn't mean a lot to me.

They certainly did have that many teenagers in their last game. One of the Darlo fans put names to ages. Regarding Parslow and Smith yesterday they were actualy not that bad on an individual level but again who was the leader keeping the whole defence organised. As soon as the oposition attack it's just panic stations. Towards the end one Darlo player who was unmarked had a totaly free header on goal to win the game. Even if you take out the individual mistakes which any player will make you have to have a leader. Ingham was going absolutely ape with the defence after their second goal.

Not sure I would agree that the centrebacks were to blame at all for yesterdays goals - first one they could *maybe* have fielded the corner better, but someone else should really have been dealing with the short corner to stop it being fired in. Second one was a horrible pass in midfield that didn't give Smith/Parslow any chance (was it Boucaud? He did not look very good yesterday...). In my opinion, a lot of the goals we concede start from serious errors in midfield, or the whole team sitting too deep (neither of which are directly the fault of the back 4).

I am quite frankly sick and tired of Mills claiming every time we draw, every single time, that it's a 'massive' point. He clings to this naive aim of the title but then claims failing to beat a crisis club is still a 'massive point'. Micky Mellon or Andy Morrell wouldn't call it a massive point if they drew at Darlo, it would be two dropped. Mills is just too positive in his comments sometimes, I get the sense he's a bit of a nice guy, which doesn't work in football. I'm not out and out criticising him, he's a good manager, but not quite good enough for his title aspiration. Just admit that's gone Millsy, and go for the playoffs please.

Mills for me got it wrong big time yesterday. The shape of the team against the weaker sides crys out for two strikers and 442. We seem overloaded in midfield and were short up front yesterday with blinkhorn often isolated. Reed and Chambers completely changed the game when they came on and made it 442 and were ripping them to shreads down the left. There was only going to be one winner then inexplicably changes it again fyfield is no winger. Would likd to see the strolling Boucaud on the bench and Reed and Blinkhorn up front for Ebsfleet Blair and Chambers on the wings Paddy and Kerr are more tham capable as a two in the middle. Mcgurk in for Parslow.

Actually Darlingtons second goal was created in their defensive half of the field. City were going forward and a ball was played to Matty Blair, but he was very slow to react, it was then intercepted by Darlingtons centre back Taylor, who ran about fifty yards with the ball before putting in a short pass to McReady who scored. But numerous City players were guilty of poor play in the build up. Lets be honest Darlington showed more determination and grit than we did yesterday, which is disappointing given that we are supposed to be one of the strongest teams this season.

Haxbyred. I was at the game yesterday. My point is that when he plays we let in goals, I am sure stats back it up. He is all over the place which unsettles everyone else at the back including the keeper. He is wholehearted gives 100% but is the worst out of the 4 centre halves we have got. I don't like having a go at city players because they play for the team I love, but this player keeps on letting this side down. There are a group of us who go to city games and it's not just me who thinks this way we all do. After saying all that haxbyred you have your opinion and I respect that very much. I hope that we both get what we want out of this season.

The second goal actually summed up what had happened in the first half. Shocking lack of effort by Blair in not bothering to challenge the Darlo player who then just waltzed past half our team. The thing about a good centre half/ captain is they don't just organise the defence but the players in front of them. There is not only no organisation in defence but no understanding between the defence and midfield. We played yesterday like a group of individuals in the first half.

Isn't one of Mill's problems to do with player's inconsistency at this level generally. When players like Boucaud, Moke and Chambers can be match winners one week and ineffective the next it must be hard to guess which ones are going to be up for a game each week? It does help to play them in the right position though. (eg Fyfield)

I see Gateshead have signed a young defender called Magnay I think, who has come through the youth ranks at Chelsea. He is described as a footballing centre half who organises and brings a bit of aggression to defending. Has Mills missed out ? This sounds like the type of player we were desperate for yesterday. Having said that none of them played well until it was almost too late,we simply cannot go on gifting teams the lead if we are to do anything this season.

Honestly I think we missed out on Miller from Darlo but yes obviously at this level you are not going to have the same level of consistency. Boucade is an example of a player who is not even close to his standards earlier in the season. Did he actually play a forward pass yesterday?
Second half I thought Kerr and Paddy both upped their game and Reed and Chambers made a big difference. The less said the better about Fyfield on the wing.

Grimsby Town fan who has lived in York for 30 years. Looking forward to the critical game. The home game was great to watch. Town fans respect the great football City played.

You won't recognise the Grimsby team. A new back 4. That old, slow LB has gone. We now have a classy 18 year old on loan from Hull, Townsend. He creates goals with good crosses.Has a great future in the game. Too good for us. Ian Miller would have been ace for you. Commanding CB, not made an error at home yet. Garner back in favour as other CB. England C player when at Mansfield. Both good.

Thanoj 19 year old in centre midfield. He has only played a few games. Can thread a pass through to Hearn. A confident striker in form who believes he will score with every chance. 55 goals in last 1.5 seasons. Faster and better nearly with each game. Frightens defences. Kick him if you can catch him.

Hearn works very hard, creates chances for others and crosses very well. He hunts the ball on the wings or deep if he is not getting service. He goes direct for goal and is very strong.

We have been winning games without being on top form for most. Since Oct unbeaten over 90 mins. Took the lead against Salisbury in ET at home in FA cup. They then deservedly won. Not looked back since. There is character and persistence in the team now. Telford were difficult yesterday but we found a way to win late.

We need to win against Sat. We have the top 3 to play away. Will settle for 1-0. Bring a good away support to create a great atmosphere. I am taking at least 1 City fan. We were not voted the coldest ground in the country - warm clothing needed for Feb.

I dont want to openly criticise our centre halfs but 3 of the 4 are not good enough. Fyfield is a good centre half in the making and I would like to see him playing alongside someone like Creighton.
If we dont get someone in I fear that some of the great players we have this season will be wasted.

It is still all to play for and I'd rather be watching this season's City rather than the teams from the recent past. The mighty Mariners will take some beating but we always seem to do better against better opponents. We'll certainly need our thermals.

MILLS ALERT You have something like 3 days to sign a centre half that can actually organise our defence and save the season. If not I can see a defeat at Grimsby and us slipping out of the play offs. I'm sick and tired of closing my eyes every time the oposition attacks.
we know your views duffy why do you have to keep monotonously repeating them. Also it is not courteous, and even rude, to call someone by their surname alone!

We already have 4 centre backs, we are not operating on an unlimitless budget

I know I do go on about it I just think its so important. Others are now starting to see it that way to reading other posts.Yes we do have 4 centre backs or if you like 3 and a utility player but Mills had an offer from a club to take Parslow on loan which he refused.Fyfield is still actually not classed as a centre half.

Sorry. I should, of course, have also referred to Mills as Mr Mills in my earlier post.

it must though be so frustrating for gary mills to stick with the same side that finished so well in the previous game for them to perform like that in the first half, again credit to Millsy for having the ability to realise its not working and changing it at least now we have a plan "b", but certain players just arent performing consistently in key positions. (boucard, pilkington etc)
Agree With Earlier Posts Chris Smith was easily Citys Best Players when he plays with that passion he has. Also baffled by putting fyfield on the wing we had them for the taking at that point and another 10 minutes or so we could have had a match winning third, then put fyfield on in defence with parslow in the holding role also agree Grimsby are the team of the moment and big game coming up for both sides.
also did anyone else notice it seemed just away fans were paying for parking???

We need McGurk and Walker back for Grimsby - otherwise we'll get beat there and the play-offs will be even more difficult.

i agree, for solidity the best option is McGurk and Smith, not sure how many times they have played together this season, not many I think; but they were the pairing reoponsible for the run of clean sheets last season.

Grimsby have struggled against the best teams this season. We have many new players now though, which has significantly contributed to the fine run. This improvement is down to numerous factors. Got rid of all the dead wood. The test is how we now get on against the best. Hearn did not score in the first 10 games or so, although he nearly scored in each game and played very well. Now he hardly ever misses a chance. This ability will be key in the tough games ahead.
