York City sign Jonathan Smith and George Purcell

YORK City have confirmed the signings of Forest Green midfielder Jonathan Smith and Braintree forward George Purcell.

Minstermen manager Martin Foyle landed ex-Ebbsfleet man Purcell, 22, and Smith, 23, on the eve of the Bootham Crescent club's return to pre-season training.

Both players have signed two-year deals, with City paying an undisclosed fee for Purcell and a small amount of compensation for Smith.

18 Goals for Braintree last season and only 22, not a bad 4th choice striker at all!

Welcome to City! Hope you both have great seasons.
Purcell was second highest top scorer in BSS last season with 18 goals - left sided striker/winger.

Well happy with this news. Also, knowing Gash and Barrett must help the move up North. And hopefully will help him on the pitch too. Fair to say he'll be more than just a "fourth choice striker".

Welcome to York lads. Look like good signings to me!

Hopefully this Purcell bloke can be another Woolford. Tricky winger that can find the net.

Martin has obviously done his homework and appears to have picked up two young players who can help us go one better than last season.
Good luck to all the lads , let's make it a season to remember and regain our league status.

Two new signings which should help freshen up the squad. The George Purcell signing was a suprise as he was not rated very highly by Ebbsfleet fans, when he played for them (according to my mate down there). But if he can score goals, then thats all that matters. If Howarth has joined Bury (Dave Smith quote) then that is a shame, as I was looking forward to seeing him.

Yup BBC Sports website confirms that Haworth has signed on a free transfer for Bury. I will be gutted if he turns out to be a top player for them and rue the chance of not signing him ourselves. However, Bury are a league club afterall and are just down the road for the younf man. I wonder if MF will be replace him? If he does then I reckon there will be two more signings and one of those will be a keeper to cover Ingham.

Is there a possibility that even though Andy Haworth has joined Bury he will still come on loan to York for 6 months before going to Bury??? Afterall when you read the article saying we have signed him it says its been confirmed with the Blackburn assistant manager.

some of you may remember back in May how I said I hoped MF would look into lower league's for a player or two, and now he's done it.
players like Paul Benson were taken from relative obscurity and scored bag-fulls in the Blue Sq Prem.
lets hope Purcell does the same for us, and if we can keep the three strikers up-top fit (and at the club!) we've got a formidable forward line.
can I also be the first one to come up with a dodgy comment regarding his surname......Purcell shows great composure!?

My only concern would be that he's already been tried at this level, so hasn't been plucked from obscurity, and not been very impressive. And there really is a gulf of difference between the Blue Square regional leagues, and the BSP

I'm more than willing to accept that he was young when he played from Gravesend and Ebbsfleet though, so hopefully he'll have a better crack at it this time, and will provide a viable alternative to RB

Agreed however he hasn't worked with the caliber of foyles coaching and management, you say there's not that much diff between the two leagues then great as he scored 22 for them last season so we could have a potential diamond if trained and coached the right way by the right people, after last season we all know mr foyle has a good eye for a good player at this level and barratt and gashy will of had input aswell just like lawless would of done with smith! We should be confident as we've kept the same core squad players and added solid decnt players to the squad whom have potential
up the reds bring on kiddy another great season ahead for is yorkies!!

I think Monkey actually says there IS a big difference between BSS and BSP.

Sorry misread the article however if he scores half the goals from last season under foyles guidance then we will have a good 4th choice striker on our hands!!!
