YORK City midfielder Luke Summerfield is doubtful for Saturday's trip to his former club Shrewsbury.

Summerfield, 27, was released after two years with the Shropshire club following their relegation from Sky Bet League One last season.

But, having been an unused substitute when the two teams met at Bootham Crescent back in October, he could miss out again despite establishing himself as a key player under Russ Wilcox since that 1-0 reverse for the Minstermen.

The former Championship campaigner picked up an ankle injury during the latter stages of Tuesday night's 2-1 home win over Morecambe, meaning Tom Platt and Lewis Montrose are on standbv to replace him against the promotion-chasing hosts at the New Meadow.

City chief Russ Wilcox said: "Luke's probably touch and go. He rolled his ankle on Tuesday.

"It wasn't a contact injury but there's a bit of swelling and he's a bit sore. He's desperate to play for lots of reasons.

"It's against his old club and he's in terrific form, which has been really pleasing. He's played a big part during the last six games and it's no coincidence that we have looked more creative and scored more goals, including a couple from Luke himself, since he came back from his last injury."

With Tuesday's win having secured City's Football League status for another season, Wilcox has now set his 18th-placed side the target of ending the campaign in mid-table with a win this Saturday potentially lifting the club above another four teams.

He said: "There's still important work to be done. We know Shrewsbury away is going to be a tough game but it's important that our fans see a fully-committed display.

"That should always be the case whether you're at the top end of the table, the bottom or sitting where we are now. It's also important to try and build something to take into next season.

"Momentum is a big word in football and, if we can keep this run of form going over the next three games, that will give everybody a lift before the summer. If staying up meant we finished third-bottom, then we'd have had to accept that, but there's a chance to push up the table now and it's important to get as high as we possible can."

Having taken charge of City for the first time during that home defeat against Micky Mellon's promotion chasers, Wilcox is also keen to demonstrate the progress that has been made during his six-month tenure, adding: "There were four players that started that game (Michael Ingham, Keith Lowe, John McCombe and Michael Coulson) who started on Tuesday night.

"Even then, though, it was a fully-committed display. Ryan Jarvis' sending off made life difficult for the last 25 minutes but we probably didn't deserve to lose the game late on.

"They are a good team with a great squad that Micky Mellon has put together, which shows with where they are in the table, but we will be trying to go there and show them that we have moved forward."
