YORK City boss Russ Wilcox will not enter into contract talks with players until the club are certain of avoiding relegation.

Wes Fletcher, Josh Carson, Michael Ingham, Tom Platt and Lewis Montrose will all be out of contract at Bootham Crescent at the end of the season, as will Dan Parslow and Ryan Jarvis, who are currently out on loan with Grimsby and Aldershot respectively.

Aside from 21-year-old pair Platt and Carson, the rest of the players will be entitled to free transfers under the Bosman ruling but Wilcox is not prepared to discuss who will be on his retained list with the Minstermen still needing one more win to guarantee their Football League status for another season.

He said: “There will be no mention of contracts at this stage. There’s still a job to do and strange things happen in football.

“We’ve got to make sure nothing strange happens to us and nobody will be getting to know anything until we cross that line and are fully clear of relegation.” Thirteen players – Keith Lowe, Russell Penn, Dave Winfield, John McCombe, Luke Summerfield, Michael Coulson, Femi Ilesanmi, Jake Hyde, Jason Mooney, Marvin McCoy, Anthony Straker, Emile Sinclair and Ben Hirst – have deals with City beyond this summer.

Loan signings Bobby Olejnik, Stephane Zubar, Brad Halliday, Shaq Coulthirst, Shaun Miller and Josh O’Hanlon, meanwhile, will return to their parent clubs at the season’s end.

Wilcox, meanwhile, has added that ten-goal top scorer Hyde, who is contracted to the club until July 2017, could attract interest from higher-division outfits if he performs as he did during Saturday’s 1-0 ten-man victory against Hartlepool.

“It was the best game I’ve seen him have since I’ve been in charge,” the City chief declared. “His overall game was outstanding.

“The only thing his performance lacked was a goal but he created a few half-chances for himself too. His retention of the ball in the final third was excellent and that’s vital.

“It helps the team get up the pitch and sets up counter-attacks and there’s more to come from him too.

“He’s still only 24 and, if he performs like he did against Hartlepool on a regular basis, bigger clubs will look at him.”

Hyde and his team-mates have also been encouraged to shoot more – a policy that has paid off for midfielder Summerfield, whose last two goals have taken deflections on their way into the net.

“During our lean spell, we looked through the stats at what we could improve and our number of shots on goal was low,” Wilcox pointed out.

“If you don’t shoot, you don’t score but, if you do, you can get deflections.

“Like us, Burton also got one against Luton on Saturday that could prove important for them.”
